    Democracy Class Launches!

    Friday, September 10th, 2010

Rock the Vote launched our High School Civics program Democracy Class in Los Angeles and Washington, DC last week. At the LA launch, Rock the Vote was joined by California Secretary of State Debra Bowen, LA City Councilman Tony Cardenas and of course the hip-hop group Cali Swag District. After registering students who were eligible to vote and talking about the importance of young people participating the political process, Cali Swag District threw it down for the students at Arleta High School.

Watch this video to see what went down outside of LA.

    Buckeyes vote. Buckeyes win.

    Friday, September 3rd, 2010

September is known for a few things: Cool fall breezes, back to school sales and only one more month to register to vote before the OHIO October 4th voter register deadline (other state deadlines can be found here). What September really means here in Ohio though, is it’s time for some OHIO STATE FOOTBALL!

Last night, the No, 2 Buckeyes kicked off their season with a 45-7 victory against Marshall. Marshall scored their only 7 points during the first quarter, with Ohio State preventing the Thundering Herd from scoring again for the remainder of the game. Heisman hopeful Terrell Pryor led his team with 3 touchdowns and the promise of an exciting season of OSU football.

At Rock The Vote, we’ve teamed up with the student organization OSU Votes to make voter registration easy and available to the entire Ohio State campus. This means we’ll be touting our scarlet and grey all September around the shoe. We’ll be tailgating and tabling to remind you to update your registration to your current address or inspire you to register for the first time.

This midterm election is an exciting one in Ohio with a heavily contested governor’s race, senate race, and countless congressional and local races heating up. They all have impact in how Ohioans live their day-to-day lives, and it’s exciting to see so many students get involved.

We hope to see you at the next OSU game on September 11 when Ohio State takes on the University of Miami. Following that, Ohio University and Eastern Michigan each get their chance to be shamed by the Buckeyes on the 18th and 25th of September. Check out live.rockthevote.com for what we’ll be doing around OSU Football and ways you can come out and join us. OH!

    Going back to school?

    Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Rock the Vote has events happening on college campuses across the country to register new voters. Every year, freshman leave home for college and returning students move

from the dorms to apartments or from place-to-place. Rock the Vote is there to make sure that when a student moves, they are going to be eligible to vote at their new address.

Click here to find an event on campus and join in. But if you can’t find one at your school, click here to start one.

While we’ve got events going on in some place, we can’t be everywhere. Unless we can! That’s where you come in. Sign up on our website to create your own event to re-register people who have moved and register new voters.

There’s all sorts of tips on how to do it. Don’t worry, it’ll be fun. Plus, think about all the new people you can meet.

Yes, 1/3 of the eligible electorate

    Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Rock the Vote’s Thomas Bates and the Washington Bus’ Thomas Goldstein wrote an op-ed for the Seattle Times detailing how young voters will own a huge percentage of the electorate and why they should not be ignored in this election cycle.

When campaigns focus on “perfect” or “near perfect” voters, namely those who have participated in three or four of the past four elections, young people whose voting records may be perfect but too short are not targeted for those glossy mail pieces. It’s a bit like throwing a party, not inviting someone … and then wondering why they didn’t show up.

But check this out Millennial Voters, those born after 1980 are the largest generation in the history of the United States. Each day 13,000 become eligible to vote. That’s 9 million a year.

First, a touch of background about young voters: The most distinctive attribute of the rising Millennial Generation — which generally includes those born after 1980 — is its size. The Millennials are the largest generation in the history of the United States — larger than the baby boomers and twice the size of Generation X. Nearly 13,000 young people turn 18 every day across America, introducing 9 million new potential young voters this cycle.

In fact, by the year 2015, Millennials will make up one-third (yes, one-third) of the eligible electorate. Needless to say, investment in young voters is a growth market.

The older electorate is relatively stable: Very few people will change a lifelong habit of voting or not voting. But even the slightest increase in young-voter participation changes elections. If youth turnout increases modestly — say 2 percentage points (which is the equivalent of the national increase from 2004 to 2008) — it would be enough to alter the outcomes in many elections across the state.
