Waiting in Cleveland – remembering Temple

    Monday, October 18th, 2010

We have a day off today.  I’m chillin’ in Cleveland and visiting the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Today is the first day without a voter pledge event and I have to tell you – I’m already missing the energy of the students and young voters who  are pledging to vote and volunteering for Trick or Vote. We’re on our way to Michigan State in a few hours and I can’t wait to get started again. I know that MSU is ready to vote fearlessly – it’s going to be fantastic.

So, what happened at Temple? 255 voter pledges is what happened! More than 3,000 students came out to dance to Passion Pit and the two amazing openers – K. Flay and Black Joe Lewis (Seriously – check both of them out). When they weren’t jumping through the Liacouras Center they were stopping at the Rock the Vote/Trick or Vote table to pledge and sign up for the Philly Trick or Vote.

It was spectacular – the bands put on the best show of the tour so far and the pledges from Temple students put us at just above 1,000 voter pledges in three days!

It would be great to see you out at the other shows – after MSU we’re on our way to Indiana, Vanderbilt, Northern Illinois, Tufts, UNC Chapel Hill and more. Check us out here and come to the show!

Passion Pit: Pledging to Vote and Scooping Ice Cream at Temple

    Saturday, October 16th, 2010

It’s cold today in Philly.  But that didn’t stop Temple from enjoying free ice cream scooped by Passion Pit.  It also didn’t stop tons of young voters from pledging to vote.

It’s Homecoming Day here and as students waited for the buses to take them to the game at the Linc, Passion Pit scooped ice cream and asked students to pledge to vote.  It was brisk, forty degrees, and windy – but the sun was shining and young voters were letting the world know that November 2 is a day on, a day to vote fearlessly.  That and a cheese-steak from Pat’s was a nice kickoff to a day of Owls pledging to vote.

More on Temple later – time to get inside to get our pledge on.

    The Meaning of July 4th

    Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Rock the Vote volunteer Tim Rayburn has seen people risk their lives to cast a ballot.

During his service from October 2007 to May 2008, the 22 year-old U.S. Marine stood guard at polling places during local elections in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province.

“The people were just so thankful to get the opportunity to vote,” he says of the election day. “You could see the joy on their faces.”

Upon returning to his home state of Pennsylvania, however, Tim felt that too many of his fellow Americans had become disconnected from the political process. He wanted to do something to engage those people. A text message let him know about Rock the Vote’s Community Kick Off event in Philadelphia, and the rest is history. Tim not only attended that night’s event to learn more about Rock the Vote, but also stayed afterward to chat with RTV’s Pennsylvania State Coordinator Colin Hicks. Tim says they talked about politics and voting late into the night and have been close friends ever since.

This 4th of July, Tim was with Rock the Vote for Philly’s party on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, which featured a concert by the Roots and the Goo Goo Dolls followed by a fireworks show. He was among a dedicated team of Rock the Vote staff and volunteers who came from as far away as Washington, DC to register voters. It was a hot day, but it was a great chance to talk to people who were interested in talking about the young voters, elections or were simply looking to escape the heat in the Rock the Vote tent.

Some new voters were so excited they actually asked us, “What’s today’s date?”

When we gently reminded them it was July 4th, they would laugh. But it was clear that this crowd understood the symbolic nature of registering to vote on Independence Day.

“Now I’ll always remember the day I registered,” said one new voter.

Tim will also remember this weekend as the first time he volunteered with Rock the Vote.

“It was definitely hard work,” he says. “But it was really satisfying to see that we registered so many people to go out there and vote.”
