    Julian Assange continues his extradition battle in Britain’s Supreme Court, arguing that sending him to Sweden would violate “fundamental principles of natural law.” Assange’s case teeters on whether Sweden’s public prosecutor can properly issue a warrant for Assange’s arrest on charges of sex crime allegations. Lawyers in Assange’s case argue that only judges can issue arrest warrants and that the prosecutor does not qualify for judicial authority. If Assange were to be sent to Sweden and effectively charged and convicted, he would face fines and as much as six years in prison.

    America’s readiness to take care of a growing number of aging Americans has spurred job growth in the health care market. The health care market was one of the few sectors to add jobs during the secession, as demand for nursing aides to surgeons rose. Almost 87 million Americans will be 65 or older by 2050. Health care is expected to add four million employees and be the second-biggest job gainer by 2018.

    According to a secret NATO report, derived from thousands of interrogations, the Taliban remains active and has wide support from the Afghan people and Pakistani security services. Pakistani officials are denying the report’s allegations that they know the locations of senior Taliban leaders. The report is based on 27,000 interrogations with more than 4,000 captured Taliban, al-Qaeda foreign fighters and civilians.

    After President Obama’s bailout of the auto industry in 2008, Chrysler is showing a comeback, posting its first operating profit and first net profit since 1997. CEO Sergio Marchionne said Chrysler expects to earn a profit of $1.5 billion this year. Since the rescue, Chrysler has added 9,400 jobs and plans to announce it will add 1,600 more in Illinois.

    Pharmaceutical company Pfizer says a “packaging error” led to the mislabeling of one million packets of birth control. Fourteen lots of Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and 14 lots of Norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol tablets have been recalled. The company advises that the doses in these packages are not correct, and while there are not any health dangers, there is the risk of unintended pregnancy.

    With superior fundraising and resources, Mitt Romney dealt a major setback to opponent Newt Gingrich by sweeping the Florida primary last night, leading by double digits. While Romney lost in Florida four years ago, effectively ending his previous campaign, his support last night came from a range of Florida supporters. Santorum, who came in third as he tended to his hospitalized daughter, has moved on to Nevada already, presenting himself as the Gingrich alternative. Ron Paul, who came in fourth place for the second time straight has also started campaigning in Nevada.

    Facebook is taking its first step toward going public today. The Facebook IPO will be the biggest tech offering and one of the biggest on the market. Facebook’s revenue doubled from $2 billion in 2010 to $4.2 billion in 2011. AP reports that the company, when ready for public sale, will be valued at $75 billion to $100 billion.

      Amidst a standing ovation and a heart-felt hug from Obama, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords graced the House floor one last time last night. Giffords was shot in the head one year ago when a gunman opened fire at a public event outside of a Tucson grocery store. Giffords will cast her final vote on a bill that will give the Homeland Security Department greater ability to go after ultralight planes suspected of transporting narcotics from Mexico.

      Despite her failed presidential bid, Michelle Bachmann announced that she will seek a fourth term in the U.S. House. Bachmann’s announcement came out during a critical interview over Obama’s State of the Union Speech.

      Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey announced that he would veto a bill legalizing same-sex marriage and instead has asked NJ’s state legislature to put the issue on the ballot for voters to decide.

        Even though Muammar Gaddafi has been deceased for four days, he has yet to be buried. His corpse, along with that of his son Mutassim and his military chief, are on public display in a meat locker in Misrata. Thousands of Libyans have turned out to see them. “He made our lives hell,” said Ritha Mohammed. “I wanted to see him dead with my own eyes. Who cares if it’s not dignified for him. That was not his first concern for any of the people here.” Meanwhile, a gruesome video has surfaced of what appears to be Gaddafi’s final moments. The video depicts rebel fighters pummeling him as he appears to beg for his life. Gaddafi died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to his autopsy report.

        The United States has pulled Ambassador Robert Ford out of Syria due to security concerns. The U.S. is citing President Bashar Assad’s regime for threatening Ford. The U.S. has received “credible threats against his personal safety in Syria,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Monday. Ford has been subject to intimidation by pro-government thugs, and he enraged Syrian authorities with his forceful defense of peaceful protests and harsh critique of a government crackdown that has now claimed more than 3,000 lives.

        Due to GOP members of congress blocking his jobs bill, President Obama plans to launch a series of executive-branch actions to confront housing, education and other economic problems over the coming months. “We can’t wait” for lawmakers to act will be Obama’s new campaign theme. According to an administrative official, the President will kick off his new offensive in Las Vegas, ground zero of the housing bust, by promoting new rules for federally guaranteed mortgages so that more homeowners can refinance and avert foreclosure.

        Steven Hayes was convicted last year of murder and other counts from his Cheshire home invasion and triple homicide. Now, in letters to a woman named Lynn, Hayes admits to 17 other murders. “Yes, I’ve killed before,” Hayes bragged. “I have 17 kills throughout the Northeast United States. Perfect victims and well executed, controlled endeavors.” Hayes claims to have kept a shoe from each of his victims. In the letter, he also criticizes Joshua Komisarjevsky, his accomplice in the Cheshire murders, for being weak and not possessing enough evil.

        On Monday, founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange said the site will have to stop publishing secret cables and become a purely fund-raising resource if it is unable to end a financial block by Visa and MasterCard. Wikileaks will need 3.5 million dollars to continue running after the two credit card companies stopped processing donations for the site. “If WikiLeaks does not find a way to remove this blockade, given our current levels of expenditure we will simply not be able to continue by the turn of the year,” Assange told a news conference.

        A teacher in Florida could face thousands of dollars in fines for helping students register to vote. Jill Cicciarelli organized a drive at the start of the school year to get students registered to vote, but she did not meet the requirements for Florida’s new election laws which states that all third parties who sign up new voters must submit applications within 48 hours. “This isn’t someone who was going to commit fraud,” Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Ann McFall said. “She was doing a good thing. New Smyrna Beach High School was doing a good thing.”

        Non-profit Rock the Vote will heavily utilize mobile alerts for the upcoming 2012 election. The organization will continue to use mobile polling and alerts during live events and to drive voter registration and turnout. The group has tested its mobile alerts during primaries and has found that sending out text reminders the day before an election increases turn-out 2-4 percent. Rock the Vote will also continue to send out text messages with a link to fill out a voter registration form. “Rock the Vote is recognizing that if want to reach younger audiences, anything mobile is going to get a higher recognition,” said Dorrian Porter, CEO at Mozes, Palo Alto, CA.

        On Saturday, Nevada’s GOP voted to move its caucus date from January 14th to February 4th. New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner is now expected to set the state’s primary for January 1st. Gardner is supposed to officially announce the date on Monday. “This change ensures that Nevada retains its prominent national role, as the first contest in the West and it restores Nevada’s full slate of delegates to the Republican National Convention,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement. “With this decision Nevada will receive the attention it deserves, and the national spotlight will focus clearly on the devastating effects that President Obama’s economic policies have had on the Silver State.”

          The Senate voted 50-49 to block President Obama’s $447 billion jobs package. The President had spent most of last month campaigning for the jobs bill, arguing that Republicans were being too partisan. However, Democrats like Senators Ben Nelson (Neb.) and Jon Tester (Mont.) ended up voting against the bill. Also, a number of other centrists in the party indicated that they would vote against the package even though they supported launching a debate on the measure.

          Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, is sending a very strong message to Iran after threats were made to kill the Saudi Ambassador to the US. US Attorney General Eric Holder says the alleged conspiracy was “conceived, sponsored and directed from Iran.” Two Iranians have been charged over the plot. The US has also issued a worldwide alert warning of more threats to US interests from Iran.

          ‘Austin Powers’ actor allegedly kills sex offender in prison, http://lat.ms/no9RFC
          An ‘Austin Powers’ actor that was convicted of torturing a woman in Orange County is being accused of killing his cellmate on Tuesday. The cellmate was a parole violator who had been sentenced to two years for failing to register as a sex offender, according to a prison report. A cause of death is pending.

          30 years after the skeletal remains of John Wayne Gacy’s victims were found under his house, authorities are exhuming the remains in hopes of identifying them. The Cook County Sheriff’s Department is urging relatives of any male who disappeared between 1970 and Gacy’s 1978 arrest to undergo saliva tests in order to compare their DNA with that of the skeletal remains.

          Accused “underwear bomber” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab pleaded guilty to eight charges after he returned from a 45-minute recess, ending the most high-profile terrorism case in the United States since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The 25-year-old Nigerian and self-proclaimed al-Qaida operative faces up to life in prison from charges that include attempted murder, attempted use of weapons of mass destruction and conspiracy to commit terrorism, for his attempt to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day 2009.

          Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler made the false claim that thousands of non-citizens were voting in Colorado and sued the Denver County Clerk and Recorder to only send ballots to voters who voted in the 2010 election. On Friday, a Colorado state court denied Secretary Gessler’s attempt to keep Denver County citizens who did not vote in 2010 from receiving ballots in the mail.

          At the debate Tuesday, Mitt Romney offered a tough defense of the health care plan he signed as governor of Massachusetts and sought to look beyond his Republican presidential rivals by presenting himself as the leader who is best prepared to take on President Obama. Romney all but ignored his rival at the last three debates, Rick Perry, and even selected Michelle Bachman over Perry when given the opportunity to question another candidate.

          On Tuesday, National Coming Out Day, gay rights activist Frank Kameny died at age 86. He became a pioneer for gay rights when he was fired from his job as a government astronomer in 1957 for being gay. He did not leave quietly however. He wrote letters to the U.S. Civil Service Commission, both houses in Congress, and the White House. He also sued and lost in lower courts, but pressed on with a lengthy brief in 1961 that is now regarded as the first civil rights claim based on sexual orientation to be brought to the U.S. Supreme Court. Kamney believed that in 2009, his significance in the gay rights movement had just began to be recognized. He coined the slogan, “Gay is Good.”

          EBay Inc is set to deepen its relationship with Facebook at a developer conference this week. At the end of September, Katie Mitic, head of Platform and Mobile Marketing at Facebook, joined eBay’s board of directors sparking speculation that the two companies were working on new partnerships. Facebook Platform, which Mitic helps run, is the company’s developer unit, so any new partnership will focus on this area.

            Early Tuesday morning, Boston police arrested people who refused to leave the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. The arrests took place around 1:20am when more than 200 hundred police officers in riot gear flooded into the Greenway. Police entered the park after issuing a warning, put individual protesters on their stomachs, and cable-tied them, as other officers went around tearing down tents. The crowd, energized by the police presence, chanted: ‘‘The people united will never be defeated,’’ “This is a peaceful protest,” and “The whole world is watching.’’

            New York’s securities industry could lose 10,000 jobs by the end of 2012. Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli made the prediction, also noting that bonuses could be reduced. If these predictions are true, it would mean a 17% decline in Wall Street’s job force and a major blow to the economy. The Comptroller said one in thirteen jobs in New York, and one in eight jobs in New York City rely on these security firms.

            In an ad that hit radio airwaves on Monday, companies promises one million jobs if lawmakers will create lesser regulations and lower taxes on businesses. The new jobs that are promised in the ad would come from expanding oil and gas drilling and building new pipelines, says the American Petroleum Institute, an industry lobbying group that paid for the ad campaign. However, the API ad exaggerates the effect that looser drilling policies would have on employment; more than half of its projected job growth would come between 2015 and 2030. Still, presidential candidates are using these faulty statistics in promising the creation of new jobs.

            President Obama’s American Jobs Act is coming to the Senate floor for a vote today. Even though Obama has been going around the country in a campaign-style promotion of the Jobs Act, it is already in jeopardy. The plan features payroll tax cuts for workers and businesses, $175 billion in spending on roads, school repairs and other infrastructure, as well as unemployment assistance and help to local governments to avoid layoffs of teachers, firefighters and police officers. The President proposes a 5.6% tax bump for incomes of over $1 million dollars.

            Republicans and Democrats are set to fight again over voter ID laws, this time, in Nebraska. “It’s never a good thing. The more roadblocks you put up to voting the less participation you have,” said UNO Political Science Professor Paul Landow. Early this year, lawmakers tabled a photo ID bill sponsored by State Sen. Charlie Janssen. Douglas County Democratic Party Chairman Mike Leahy said he thinks a bill will go before the full legislature this time around and that it might pass.

            In Maine, a “people’s veto” referendum is on the ballot. On November 8th, Maine residents will be voting to repeal a new state law that requires voters to register at least two days before an election. A repeal would restore the state’s same-day voter registration which has been available to residents for four decades.             Newly released records show that seniors in the Obama administration used Mitt Romney’s landmark healthcare law in Massachusetts as a model for the new federal law, even recruiting some of Romney’s own health care advisers and experts to help craft the act that now derided by Republicans as “Obamacare.” “The White House wanted to learn a lot on what we’d done in Massachusetts,” said Jon Gruber, an MIT economist who advised the Romney administration on healthcare. “They really wanted to know how we can take that same approach we used in Massachusetts and turn that into a national model.”

            The new Apple iPhone 4s has already broken records. Apple reported on Monday that the phone was ordered by one million people in 24 hours. The company said that the iPhone 4S has surpassed sales of the iPhone 4, of which 600,000 were sold in the first 24 hours. After the 4s was released, critics everywhere bashed the phone. After seeing the new iPhone 4S announcement, C.K. Lu, an analyst at the research firm Gartner, told Reuters: ”Apple no longer has a leading edge; its cloud service is even behind Android; it can only sell on brand loyalty now.”
