The same zoo in Denmark responsible for euthanizing a healthy giraffe in February is under fire again for euthanizing four lions to make way for a new one. The lions killed were two young lions that were dubbed “too young” to live on their own and their parents. Tobias Stenbaek Bro, spokesman for the Copenhagen Zoo, said that they tried to send the four lions to another home, but no one was interested. The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria stated that the Copenhagen Zoo had not broken any laws or violated any conduct codes.

Michelle Byrom had been convicted of plotting to kill her abusive husband with her son and another man. However, some people believe that she deserves to live, especially because her son has confessed to murdering his father four different times. The execution is set to occur on Thursday.

Kamryn Renfro was told on Monday that she would not be allowed to go to school because her shaved head violated the school’s dress code. Renfro shaved her head to support her best friend Delaney Clemets, who is undergoing chemotherapy for neuroblastoma and lost her hair. The original story sparked tremendous outrage earlier this week, but Renfro’s mother is now asking all the negativity to stop. The board held a special meeting on Tuesday, voting 3-1 in favor of letting Renfro return to school with a shaved head.

How One Rocker Is Bringing Her Community Together

    Friday, November 15th, 2013

Every now and again, we catch word of Rock the Vote supporters doing awesome work in their own communities, and it’s no surprise! With a network of so many incredible young activists, it’s hard to keep track of all the lives you guys are changing. Really, you make us proud (and you also make us look good when we say things like “young people are changing the world”).

So when we heard about Moriah Six, we knew we had to share. Moriah is a Rock the Vote Community Street Team leader and a student at Johnson & Wales University. She is raising money to pay hospital bills for Gwendelyn, a toddler fighting childhood cancer. And how is she doing that? Well, we’ll let her tell you herself.

    1. So Moriah, how did you first get involved with Rock the Vote?

I am an Entertainment Event Management major and was looking for ways to get involved with events while helping out a great cause. Since I interned for Headcount I also was introduced to Rock The Vote. I took a look at the great volunteer opportunities and decided to get involved. I volunteered at multiple events over the summer(Warped Tour, The Killers etc). And plan on continuing to volunteer.

    2. How are you planning to support Gwendelyn and her family?

Gwennie is a 20 month old who is fighting childhood cancer. She was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in April 2013. She is stage 3 and at High Risk. Gwennie is currently undergoing chemotherapy, stem cell transplant, surgery, radiation and immunotherapy. She travels to Robert Wood Johnson and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for her treatments.

I am organizing a benefit concert here in Asbury Park, NJ, and all ticket proceeds from this concert event will go directly to the Marra family. As Gwendelyn fights the cancer she is continuously supported by her family and friends. All ticket proceeds will be going directly to the Marra Family.

    3. What are some words of inspiration that you would share with Rock the Vote supporters?

I have known the Marra family for many years and have babysat for the family. Gwennie is the youngest and has maintained that bright smile throughout all of her treatment. Since her chance of infection is so high Gwennie looks forward to “hanging out” with her brother and sister via Skype. We are looking forward to the day that she will be cancer free so she can play with her siblings and friends like a normal little kid.

Moriah can be reached at MLS094@wildcats.jwu.edu. Here are the details for the benefit concert. If you live in or near NJ, please support Moriah and Gwendelyn!
