JP Morgan sends Wall Street lower, http://reut.rs/Kf9DF6
Stock index futures are down today after JPMorgan called an emergency conference call with investors to reveal a trading loss of $2 billion due to “egregious mistakes” on a hedging strategy. As a result, the biggest U.S. bank by assets will most likely post a loss of $800 million this quarter; before this error, it was due to post a $200 million profit. The mistake was from a trader called the “London Whale,” who amassed a outsized position that hedge funds bet against.

Opposition: Syrian regime orchestrated bombings, http://bit.ly/JIB32d
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Beijing on Friday that “outside forces” executed the twin blasts that killed at least 40 in Damascus yesterday. “Some countries are inciting outside forces to interfere into the Syrian situation, which is unacceptable,” Lavrov said, although he would not specify the countries he believed responsible. The Syrian government has blamed “terrorists” for the attacks, while the opposition says the government is responsible.

(via USA Today) Shoe-thrower interrupts Norway killing trial, http://usat.ly/KMIGJS
The trial of Anders Behring Breivik was interrupted briefly Friday when the brother of one of his 77 victims hurled a shoe at the confessed mass killer and yelled, “Go to hell,” before being escorted from the court room, police and witnesses said. It was the first outburst from the normally subdued crowd watching the terror trial in Oslo’s district court since the proceedings began in mid-April. Breivik — a self-styled, anti-Muslim militant — has been charged with terrorism, admitting he carried out a bomb-and-shooting rampage that stunned Norway on July 22

More details have been revealed about the CIA double-agent who foiled the Yemeni underwear bomb plot. The agent is Arabic with a British passport and has lived in the UK for many years. He was recruited by Saudi antiterrorist agencies after he had become involved with a group of jihadists and had the ability to pass for a terrorist.

(via The Seattle Times) NAACP launches voter registration push in Georgia, http://bit.ly/JjajXZ
Saying it won’t let recently enacted voter ID laws suppress turnout, the NAACP on Wednesday launched a nationwide drive to register thousands of mostly minority, student and elderly voters before the Nov. 6 elections. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People says these groups could be the ones most affected by laws requiring them to show identification before they can exercise their right to vote.

Los Angeles event brings $15 million to Obama campaign, http://lat.ms/K6igR4
In what may be the largest campaign haul to come from one night, George Clooney’s soiree at his Hollywood home garnered the Obama campaign $15 million. For $40,000 a plate, the likes of Diane Von Furstenberg, Robert Downey Jr, and James Brolin were able to rub shoulders with the president and listen to him speak.  ”Obviously yesterday we made some news,” Obama told the crowd.  ”But the truth is it was a logical extension of what America is supposed to be.”

Romney to shift focus from gay rights to economy, http://apne.ws/INV8CV
Mitt Romney is trying to shift the nation’s focus back to the economy after President Obama historically endorsed same-sex marriage. Romney has his work cut out for him as his next campaign stop is in North Carolina, where voters recently decided to ban gay marriage in their state’s constitution. He also will be delivering the commencement address at Liberty University, which was founded by Rev. Jerry Falwell, a strong opposer of gay rights.

    CRUCIAL:

(via Fox News) Obama to hold press conference on Super Tuesday: President Barack Obama will hold his first news conference of the year Tuesday, the same day his Republican rivals face off in 10 voting contests. White House spokesman Jay Carney announced the Tuesday afternoon news conference on Twitter. Obama held his last full news conference in November during the APEC summit in Hawaii. Tuesday’s news conference comes amid an uptick in the U.S. economy. But the Obama administration has found itself dealing with several pressing foreign policy concerns, including the violent government crackdown in Syria and rising tensions in the Middle East over Iran’s disputed nuclear program, http://fxn.ws/xm6ob7

Holder expected to explain rationale for targeting U.S. citizens abroad, http://wapo.st/z6jUuM
Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. will reveal details today on the Obama administration’s legal process for killing U.S. citizens abroad. The prime example in this case is New Mexico-born Anwar al Awlaki, who joined an al-Qaeda operative in Yemen and was killed in an airstrike this past September. Holder is expected to argue that killing an American terrorist is legal under the 2001 congressional authorization of the use of military force and that America’s self-defense is not only within traditional enemy battlefields.

Barack Obama and Benajamin Netanyahu in Iran talks, http://bbc.in/wS1y2K
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet at the White House  with President Obama this morning to “discuss a range of strategic issues of mutual concern.” Obama said yesterday at a pro-Israel conference that there has been too much “loose talk” of starting war with Tehran. Israel believes that Iran is developing nuclear weapons despite the Iranian government’s denial, leading Israel to discuss possible preemptive strikes against Iran’s nuclear development.

Bay Area Wakes Up To Magnitude 4.0 East Bay Quake, http://cbsloc.al/Ajvf3H
A 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay Area at 5:33 a.m. this morning. The quake was felt across much of the East bay, North Bay, and San Francisco, and only lasted a few seconds. The shallow quake was centered 13 miles from San Francisco City Hall. So far there are no major reports of damage, injuries, or power outages.

Mitt Romney has the momentum in Ohio: Poll, http://wapo.st/w2BprE
Quinnipiac University is giving Ohio to candidate Mitt Romney, showing him leading Rick Santorum by 34 to 31 percent. The poll cites that the lead is significant compared to Romney’s 10-point deficit last week. However, as always, another poll conflicts, with NBC/Marist projecting a dead heat between the candidates. Quinnipiac University surveyed a total of 753 likely Ohio Republican voters. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich comes in third with 15 percent; Texas Rep. Ron Paul follows with 12 percent. If Romney wins Ohio, strategists say the primary is over.

(via CNN) Poll: All tied up in Tennessee: An American Research Group survey released Sunday indicates that 35% of likely GOP primary voters in the state are backing former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, with 31% supporting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 20% backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and 9% supporting Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. Santorum’s four point advantage is within the poll’s sampling error, which means it’s basically all tied up.
