    Papandreou ‘to offer to resign’, http://bbc.in/rrDik6
    Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou will resign Thursday after an emergency cabinet meeting. Following the resignation, Greek President Karolos Papoulios will form a coalition government with former central banker Lucas Papademos. Papandreou had called for a vote of confidence to take place on Friday after several members of his party defected. He faced much backlash when he called for a referendum for the debt crisis plan.

    A comprehensive study released on Thursday found that 280 of the biggest publicly traded American companies have faced federal income tax bills equal to 18.5% of their profits during the last three years. About a quarter of the companies paid less than 10 percent in taxes over the past three years while 30 companies, including Boeing, Wells Fargo, and GE, appeared to pay no taxes whatsoever. Some companies have disputed the study saying it fails to account for deferred taxes.

    Elisabeth Murdoch allegedly persuaded her father to remove her brother James as chairman of News International because he had allowed the phone hacking scandal to spiral out of control. Rupert almost listened, telling James “maybe you should go” before he changed his mind the next morning. Elisabeth is also said to have pushed for the resignations of Rebekah Brooks and Les Hinton for their roles in the scandal. The Vanity Fair article also claims that Murdoch’s children attended group therapy to help figure out who would eventually take over News Corp.

    The nation’s first general strike since the 1940s took place last night in Oakland. Labor unions and teachers’ organizations have pledged support. About 360 teachers did not show up for work, and several businesses closed. Protesters also shut down the city’s port. The demonstrations turned violent when protesters took over an abandoned building. Police cleared the building with tear-gas and flashbang grenades. Later, the police raided the protesters’ main camp and arrested between 30 and 40 people.

    The number of Americans below poverty level has hit a new record of 20.5 million people. Defined as individuals living at 50 percent or less of the official poverty level, 6.7 percent of the U.S. population, or one in 15 people now fit that statistic. Neighborhoods in which at least 4 in 10 people are living in poverty have stretched over broader areas and have increased in suburbs twice as fast as in cities.

    23 year-old Hillary Adams posted a video on Youtube of her father, a family law judge, beating her 20 times with a leather belt. Hillary suffers from cerebral palsy and was attacked after being caught downloading music to her computer. She said that she video taped the attack because it had happened before and had been escalating. She told the Today show: ‘I told him I had the video… and he dared me to post it.’

    Police in Iowa have arrested Ben Clifford Dawson, an 83 year-old man, on charges of prostitution. Dawson was a candidate for the Canterville, Iowa city council. Police received a complaint that Dawson had offered to perform sex acts on a woman in exchange for repayment of a loan. The woman turned Dawson down and afterwards, he allegedly grabbed her and began kissing her neck. Now, Dawson faces two aggravated misdemeanor charges: prostitution and intent to commit sexual abuse.

    Another woman who worked with Cain at the National Restaurant Association in the 90s told The Associated Press that she had considered filing sexual harassment charges against him. The woman says Cain made suggestive remarks and gestures and once invited her back to his apartment. One of Cain’s pollsters also said things had once become very uncomfortable when Cain harassed a waitress. Radio host Steve Deace has also stated that Cain had said awkward and inappropriate things to female station staffers. The Cain campaign has accused Rick Perry’s camp of waging a smear campaign. Perry’s team has turned around and pointed the finger at Mitt Romney.

    (via Politico) Accuser’s attorney asks NRA about issuing statement: The attorney for one of the women accusing Herman Cain of sexual harassment is asking the National Restaurant Association permission to allow her to issue a public statement about her allegations. “This morning I will be emailing to the National Restaurant Association’s attorney a draft public statement requesting permission to issue it without violating the confidential settlement agreement,” Joel Bennett told POLITICO. “I will have no further statement until I hear back from the National Restaurant Association’s attorney.” http://politi.co/fNlMXs

    Fossil Teeth Put Humans in Europe Earlier Than Thought, http://nyti.ms/t7fRu1
    Scientists have discovered the oldest human fossils in existence: two infant teeth from Italy that they estimate to be between 43,000 and 45,000 years old, and a jawbone with three teeth from England that is between 41,500 and 44,200 years old. The teeth were originally found in 1964 but were disregarded as infant Neanderthal teeth. Previously, the oldest human fossil was dated to be between 37,800 and 42,000 years old.

    U.S. Seeks Aid From Pakistan in Peace Effort, http://nyti.ms/vmLQ6M
    Only a month after the United States accused Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Agency of supporting the terrorist group Haqqani, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is asking the agency to take the lead role in Afghani peace talks. Clinton called the approach “Fight, Talk, Build.” It will continue strikes against the Taliban and Haqqani network, while at the same time pushing the ISI to get both groups to the negotiating table. The plan is, however, being met with skepticism by the ISI and the Obama administration.

    In Austin, Texas and Portland, Oregon, police arrested Occupy protesters for trespassing and violating city rules. Police arrested more than two dozen people who refused to leave a park in northwest Portland after warnings that the park closed at midnight. Police also arrested 38 people in Austin who had set up a table with food and other items outside of City Hall two days after the city issued a rule that food tables must be put away between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. When the group was asked to leave, the 38 people refused and were arrested.

    On Sunday, American Abdisalan Hussein Ali’s suicide note was posted online by an Islamist militia aligned with Al Qaeda. Ali is the third American to become a suicide bomber for Somalia’s Shabab rebels. He is said to have blown himself up in an attack on African Union troops in Mogadishu. Shabab claims the attack killed several peacekeepers even though the exact number has not yet been confirmed. Ali was one of 30 Americans that the FBI believes has joined Al-Shabab, with at least 20 of them coming from Minneapolis. He was a caseworker at a prestigious law firm and a pre-med student at the University of Minnesota before disappearing in 2008.

    Phoenix flight attendant found dead in Mexico City, http://yhoo.it/vfmlcs
    American authorities are investigating the homicide of a US Airways flight attendant, based in Phoenix, who was found dead in a Mexico City hotel room while on a layover. Nick Aaronson, 33, was found early Saturday in his room at a downtown Hilton with his hands tied behind his back and evidence of him being beaten and choked. Prosecutors said no drugs, weapons or messages were found in the room.

    Tennessee’s new voter identification law allows most state and federally issued IDs to be used to vote, including work IDs issued to the faculty of state-run colleges. But the student IDs issued at those same schools are specifically prohibited. This has caused Tennessee students to feel like they have been targeted by the law. “I think this is intended to keep in check the main people who voted our current president in,” Christopher Martin, vice president of Tennessee Federation of College Democrats and a junior at Tennessee State University, stated.

    While Herman Cain was the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990′s, two women complained to colleagues and senior association officials about sexually suggestive behavior by Cain. They ultimately left their jobs at the trade group after accepting a payout. On Sunday, a reporter asked Cain, “Have you ever been accused, sir, in your life of harassment by a woman?” After being asked the question three times his only response was, “Have you ever been accused of sexual harassment?” Later today, Cain said he was falsely accused of the claims and has no knowledge of any settlement.

    FTC obtains court orders against two acne-fighting apps, http://lat.ms/sNG6S7
    The FTC has obtained a court order against AcneApp and AcnePwner from making acne-treatment claims. The apps were sold on Apple’s iTunes store and the Android Market and claimed to treat acne with colored lights emitted from phones. The app sold for $1.99 on iTunes and 99 cents on the Android marketplace. Nearly 15,000 people paid for the app.

    ‘Angry Birds’ Creator Will Open Its First Retail Stores in China This Year, http://bloom.bg/sfxsxE
    Rovio Entertainment Oy, the creator of the “Angry Birds” mobile-phone games, will open its first retail stores this year in China, which is its fastest-growing market. The company aims to gross $100 million in sales during the first year of store operation.

    A group of online hackers called Anonymous are demanding that Mexican drug cartels release one of their own kidnapped from a street protest. Anonymous is threatening to publish the identities and addresses of members of the drug group, Zetas associates. Anonymous has implied that the group will expose mainstream journalists who are in cahoots with Zetas and write negative articles about the military, which is the country’s biggest fist in the drug war.
