    Hot Wheels, Hot Pants

all dressed upOn Thursday, July 8th a crew of  Rock the Vote and New Era Colorado volunteers hit the streets of Denver for a bar crawl. New Era Colorado, a youth civic engagement organization and Rock the Vote partner in Colorado, has been doing the “Roll Call” bar crawl for years.  Not your average bar crawl, a Roll Call brings together classic bar hopping and civic engagement.

Like any group of people heading out to the bars we all dressed to impress. However, instead of the more traditional designer jeans or latest pair of Manolo Blahnik’s, we went with soccer uniforms and roller skates. Nothing breaks the ice like rolling up to a group of people looking game-ready and asking if they are registered to vote. In a few hours we were able to have a great time and register some young voters that hadn’t planned on registering to vote when they headed out for a night on the town.

Kyle and a new voterWe are already planning another roll call for the near future. So hit up live.rockthevote.com to see when you can join us. Theme suggestions for the next event are welcome.

A DJ strapped to the top

    Thursday, July 1st, 2010

The Fourth of July generally means picnics, parades, BBQs, and fireworks. Rock the Vote Colorado will be making an appearance at all these summer staples but with a special guest: the large blue New Era Colorado Bus complete with a DJ strapped to the top!

We will be kicking off America’s birthday weekend by registering voters at Denver’s First Friday Art Walk in the Santa Fe art district.

Now, an art walk sounds and might just be a tad too mundane for Rock the Vote and New Era Colorado, two organizations that pride themselves on making politics fun, but fear no more.  Enter the bus. The sight of this silver and blue retro 1989 Van Hool sporting a killer mountain goat hood ornament will be sure to get the party started.  Strap a DJ on top.  Add some roller skating volunteers and we’re looking at one hell of a night.

We won’t be stopping at the Sante Fe art district.  On Saturday. we’ll be hitting up some of Greeley and Denver’s big Fourth of July events, and on Sunday we’ll be in Boulder at the Folsom Field fireworks show.  Make sure to keep a lookout for our awesome bus which will make an appearance at many of our events!

If you want to have some fun and do the most patriotic thing imaginable this Fourth, come out this weekend to help us register voters in Colorado. We will be going all weekend and have a great time doing it so click HERE to see where you can volunteer.

    People’s fair? People’s excellent!

    Friday, June 11th, 2010

What do you get when you mix hot temperatures, the occasional crazed Rockies fan, dedicated volunteers, roller skating races, cornhole, and clipboards?  You get 200 voter registrations at the Denver People’s Fair.  Bam.

The highlight of the weekend – besides the new voter registrations – was the particularly moving version of “9 to 5” sung to us by a particularly stunning Dolly Parton drag queen. By far the best act of the weekend.Don’t miss out on another opportunity to have some fun and get involved. Click HERE to see what is coming up next in Colorado.

This past weekend Rock the Vote and New Era Colorado registered voters this great two-day Denver event.  Between roller skating races, intense games of cornhole (which RTV/NEC destroyed a few other organizations that will not be mentioned), and voter registration, everyone had a great time. Even though some of us came away with some intense sunglass tan lines.

Rock the Vote a mile high

    Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Hi! My name is Kyle Hamm and I am the new State Coordinator in Colorado. Colorado is going to be an amazing place during this election cycle and we are especially excited to be partnering with New Era Colorado to register voters and turn out young people to vote this year.  New Era shares Rock the Vote’s goal of engaging young people in politics, and we are working together to mount the largest mid-term voter registration drive ever (we think!).

In 2008, Rock the Vote Street Team volunteers registered thousands of young voters across Colorado. Not only did we register voters, but in true Rock the Vote style we did it with the help of friends like the Beastie Boys, Sheryl Crow, and other great artists.  Thousands of young people turned out and proved that young people vote and our voices matter.  In 2010, we plan to do the same.

As for me, after a few years of being a mountain man in the wilds of Colorado, I have made the move to the big city of Denver. Although I am already missing the wild life I am fired up to start working with all of Rock the Vote’s amazing volunteers to turn young people out this year and have some good times.

This summer and fall, Rock the Vote – and our great Street Team volunteers – and New Era will be engaging young people across Colorado at concerts, festivals, sporting events, and on college and high school campuses. Please stay tuned for details on how you can get involved.

     We need you!
