Foreign Journalists Killed in Afghanistan http://rtvote.com/1q09VQk
Photographer Anja Niedringhaus (48) and reporter Kathy Gannon (60) were in eastern Afghanistan on assignment to cover preparations for the country’s upcoming elections. Both knew the country well and had spent several years reporting from in-country. Earlier this morning, the two journalists were traveling with a convoy of elections administrators when an Afghan police officer, who was part of the convoy, pointed his AK-47 into their vehicle and opened fire. This is believed to be the first time an Afghan police officer has intentionally killed a foreign journalist. The police officer in question is being held in custody.

David Letterman Announces his Retirement After a 22 Year Run http://rtvote.com/1hIW8No
On the Late Show last night, David Letterman announced that he will be retiring soon from the CBS network show that he has hosted since 1993. In a statement to his audience, he said “I think it will be at least a year or so, but sometime in the not too distant future, 2015 for the love of God.” The announcement came as a surprise to CBS. As Letterman announced on last night’s show, he phoned Leslie Moonves, the network chief executive, just before stepping out on stage.

March Jobs Report Shows 192K New Jobs http://rtvote.com/1k7wqW4
It’s the first Friday of the month, which means… *drum roll*… the BLS Jobs numbers are out! The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 192K jobs were added in March, which, though less than had been hoped for, still comes in 37K jobs higher than expected. The unemployment rate remains at 6.7%, mostly due to an increase of half-a-million people in the labor force (which is a good sign– more people looking for more jobs means more growth. Learned that one in Econ 101).

    Mozilla Co-Founder Resigns Over Gay-Rights Controversy http://rtvote.com/1dXXHrb
Mozilla is learning a tough lesson this week: don’t poke the internet because it fights back. After news broke of CEO Brendan Eich’s opposition to same-sex marriage (the techie had donated $1000 to a campaign in support of California’s Prop 8), the tech world rose up in protest. The popular dating website OK Cupid banned users from accessing its website through the Mozilla Firefox web browser, urging “that our users not use Mozilla software to access OkCupid.” Eich has since resigned from his position, and Mozilla released a statement yesterday saying “we haven’t stayed true to ourselves.”

Scientists Find Water on Saturn’s Moon http://rtvote.com/QLakfr
All eyes are on Saturn’s moon Enceladus this week as scientists report the likelihood of a massive underwater ocean the size of Lake Superior. Enceladus is only 300 miles wide, which makes its diameter approximately the same width as the state of Arizona. So does this mean life could exist there? The jury is still out, but scientists say that life could “happen quickly” if conditions are right.

The Supreme Court will hear Hobby Lobby’s case that challenges Obamacare’s birth control coverage requirement; Hollywood partakes in animal cruelty; and the CIA has turned Guantanamo Bay prisoners into double agents. CRUCIAL

Supreme Court to take up Obamacare contraception casehttp://rtvote.com/1aVZJTO
The Supreme Court has accepted an Obamacare law appeal over contraception coverage. The court justices will review provisions in the Affordable Care Act requiring employers of a certain size to offer insurance coverage for birth control and other reproductive health services without a co-pay. The issue of focus is whether private companies and non-profits can refuse this, based on the claim that it violates their religious beliefs. Hobby Lobby, Inc. is one of the plaintiffs.

‘Pretty Woman’ producer says he was Israeli spyhttp://rtvote.com/1bl239I
The Israeli-born producer behind Hollywood hits, like Pretty WomanFight Club, and L.A. Confidential, has revealed that he used to serve as an Israeli spy for years. Arnon Milchan said he helped buy technologies and arms on Israel’s behalf to operate nuclear bombs. The producer also said other big Hollywood names were connected to his covert affairs.

Sandy Hook killer took motive to his gravehttp://rtvote.com/194lkGA
Connecticut authorities have released a 44-page summary of their investigation on Adam Lanza – the shooter behind Newton’s Sandy Hook Elementary School. Lanza’s motive behind the atrocious crime remains a mystery, and he gave “no clear indication” that he planned the Sandy Hook killings. Lanza’s mental illness, reclusion, and obsession with school shootings are detailed in the report.

Animals Were Harmed: Hollywood’s Nightmare of Death, Injury, and Secrecy Exposed,http://rtvote.com/1exhrP2
Too many Hollywood films and television shows, including Life of PiThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, HBO’sLuck, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (the list goes on), have caused the brutal injuries and deaths of animals on set. The “No Animals Were Harmed” trademark accreditation in the ending credits means nothing anymore. It’s time to own up to animal cruelty, Hollywood… and it’s time for us to stop it.

Penny Lane: Gitmo’s other secret CIA facilityhttp://rtvote.com/1hfZdVQ
After 9/11, the CIA made double agents out of some Guantanamo Bay prisoners. They trained them and sent them home to help the U.S. kill former and current terrorists. The prisoners/double agents were promised freedom, the safety of their families, and some very hefty bags of money from the CIA’s secret accounts. The program was carried out in a secret facility, nicknamed Penny Lane, located yards away from the Guantanamo Bay prison. This has some heavy-duty controversy written all over it.

Meanwhile, the Jonas Brothers break up, and Julianne Hough receives some intense criticism for her offensive Halloween costume.

Hawaii governor expects gay marriage bill to pass ‘within week’,http://rtvote.com/1f1FWUw
Hawaii’s legislature is expected to pass a bill legalizing gay marriage “within a week or so.” The state’s House of Representatives will pass the bill on Thursday if it passes Senate; both chambers have Democratic majorities. Governor Neil Abercrombie stated that he hopes the bill will pass before January, at the very latest.

White House: Review will address global NSA concernshttp://rtvote.com/1gXYp8Q
As more nations become enraged by NSA’s spying programs, the White House has assured the public that the collection of data on allies will not continue. A review of these programs is currently in the works, and a report on the review will be due by the end of the year. Spain is the latest country that has joined in on protests against the U.S.’s surveillance tactics; others include Germany, France, Brazil, and Mexico.

    Trick-or-treating takes a tasteless turnhttp://rtvote.com/1g9uU2E
Halloween is right around the corner, and so are some of the most offensive costumes in Halloween history. Some of the more tasteless trick-or-treaters are donning Ariel Castro costumes, blackface costumes, and even Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman costumes. There has been a backlash on social media sites (rightfully so) against such getups, and the Utah Jazz and Julianne Hough have received such criticism.

    5 killed in Dallas-area shootings; suspect arrestedhttp://rtvote.com/1f1LVZx
Police have arrested Charles Everett Brownlow, Jr., 36, for killing five people in a shooting spree in the small town of Terrell, Texas. The murders started at 5 PM Monday, and Brownlow was captured and arrested early Tuesday. The victims have not been officially identified.

Report: White House knew plans would be canceled under ACA,http://rtvote.com/1gY57eY
About 50%-75% of 14 million consumers who buy health insurance individually will have their plans cancelled in the next year because their current policies fail to meet the standards of the Affordable Care Act. Initially, the White House said that policies in effect as of March 23, 2010, could be kept even if they did not meet the requirements of the new healthcare law. The Department of Health and Human Services later narrowed that provision. NBC News reports that the Obama administration has known for three years that people’s insurance would be canceled. The White House has responded that those whose policies are voided will be automatically shifted to plans with better protections. Additionally, they claim that nothing in the Affordable Care Act forces people out of their plans, but the failure of some plans to meet the new minimum standards should be expected.

    CRUCIAL

Congressional fight over Obamacare turns to website woeshttp://rtvote.com/1ewvMLb
Although the government shutdown ended with a deal that left Obamacare untouched, the bickering over the healthcare law is far from over. Republicans are pointing out all of the problems with healthcare.gov and are holding oversight hearings next week. Some are also pushing Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, to resign after the rollout. The White House, on the other hand, fully supports her and claims that technical errors are being fixed. They are reminding people that the most important thing is not the website, but that all Americans can be insured.

Snowden Says He Took No Secret Files to Russiahttp://rtvote.com/19ehRaS
Edward J. Snowden, the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, revealed in an interview this month that he did not take any secret NSA documents to Russia when he fled there for asylum in June. He said he gave all classified documents to journalists in Hong Kong and that he made sure Chinese and Russian intelligence did not get hold of them. Snowden faces charges under the Espionage Act for leaking NSA documents to the media, but he stands by his conviction that the American people deserved to know how closely they were being watched.

Both teens are being charged as adults and face charges of petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

Bartsch, 28, was removed from the flight before take-off, charged with disorderly conduct, and held on $10,000 bail. He has confessed that this was not the first time he had done this. The TSA is in the process of suspending or terminating his employment.

Recording of mother’s voice used in search for missing autistic New York teen,http://rtvote.com/1ewHDsO
Divers, police, and rescue officers from several states have joined efforts to look for an autistic 14-year-old, Avonte Oquendo. The search has been going on for more than a week, and the NYPD has begun to play a recording of Avonte’s mother’s voice over loudspeakers. Avonte is unable to communicate verbally, and Avonte’s mother hopes he will hear her message, urging him to “walk toward the [emergency vehicles’] lights.” Avonte left his school on October 4, and the Oquendo family is in the process of filing a lawsuit against the city of New York due to the school’s failure to supervise the child.
