    News Round-Up: November 6, 2013

    Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

Results from the 2013 elections are analyzed after victors are announced—with wins by Christie, McAuliffe, and De Blasio capturing the headlines; talks of gay marriage being legal in Illinois emerge; and the mayor of Toronto publically admits to smoking crack. Meanwhile, excitement brews around the 2013 CMA’s and a Hunger Games star cuts off their hair (can you guess who?).

    CRUCIAL

Christie wins re-election; seen as prelude to 2016http://rtvote.com/1cEFYEh
Last night, Republican incumbent Chris Christie won re-election in New Jersey’s governor race with the help of female and Hispanic voters, beating out Democratic Senator Barbara Buono with over 60% of the total votes. This sets Governor Christie up as a very possible Republican candidate to run for president in 2016. However, Christie has yet to reveal his plans for a presidential candidacy.

De Blasio Is Elected New York City Mayor in Landslidehttp://rtvote.com/1cEG0fz
Bill de Blasio won NYC’s mayoral race, defeating his opponent, Joseph J. Lhota, by a margin of 49 percentage points, with 99 percent of the votes counted. De Blasio, a supporter of very liberal change, won over many New Yorkers by acknowledging rising frustrations with income inequality, aggressive policing tactics, and lack of affordable housing. The new mayor will become the first Democrat to lead NY in a generation.

    Why Terry McAuliffe barely wonhttp://rtvote.com/19DNkV2
In the days leading up to Election Day, public opinion polls showed that Democrat Terry McAuliffe had a very good lead on Republican Ken Cuccinelli for Virginia’s governor race. The final results pegged McAuliffe as the winner, but only by less than 3 percentage points leaving the race much closer than expected.

Lawmakers approve gay marriage in Illinoishttp://rtvote.com/1hNol4Q
Will Illinois be the 15th state to legalize gay marriage? It sure seems like it! Lawmakers approved a bill that extended the right to wed to same-sex couples yesterday. Governor Pat Quinn plans to sign the bill, which would go into effect on June 1, 2014.

Toronto Mayor Admits Crack Use, as Wild Ride in Office Continueshttp://rtvote.com/1baaqkI
Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, 44, is no stranger to public acts of drunken belligerence and other inappropriate behavior. In May, Ford denied smoking crack cocaine when questioned, but yesterday he officially admitted to using the drug. However, don’t expect him to be stepping down anytime soon. Up until this point, his right-of-center, suburban supporters have remained loyal. However, this most recent scandal may have been too much for his core constituency.

Progress, but still no deal, as shutdown enters Day 11http://rtvote.com/1edEn5q
The shutdown continues! The White House met with House Republicans, but there is still no deal. However, a spark of hope did come through during a brief moment between Rep. Paul Ryan and Obama. Republicans said they are willing to extend the debt ceiling for up to six weeks while negotiating other issues under a continued government shutdown. The president said he would negotiate with the Republicans only after they reopened the government and raised the debt ceiling. He is willing to accept a short-term debt deal, but he refuses to give concessions to reopen the government.

‘Corruption no more’: Judge sends a message with 28-year sentence for Kilpatrickhttp://rtvote.com/18UZCqG
The former mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick, 43, has been sentenced to 28 years in jail, but can be out in 23 years with good behavior. Among the slew of scandals behind Kilpatrick, a few include his affair with his top aide, running a secret “money-making racket” in city hall, and using funds that were intended for needy citizens to pay for his yoga classes. Judge Nancy Edmunds chastised him for his actions; Kilpatrick apologized to the people of Detroit but denied stealing from them.

Father of deceased ‘Baby Hope’ identifiedhttp://rtvote.com/18V5JuZ
On July 23, 1991, police found the body of a young girl in a picnic cooler, hidden in the woods. The unidentified girl was named ‘Baby Hope’ by the police. After a 22-year investigation, the NYPD Cold Case Apprehension Squad is now closer to finding the person responsible than ever before. Thanks to a tip and DNA testing, the mother has been found; she is cooperating with police. The identity and location of the father has also been revealed, and authorities intend to speak with him very soon as a person of interest.

The United States is still getting rid of its chemical weaponshttp://rtvote.com/18V7FUp
The global taboo on chemical weapons is growing stronger, especially after today’s ceremony awarding the 2013 Noble Peace Prize to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The Nobel committee thanked the OPCW for risking their lives to eliminate the stockpiles of poison gas in Syria. The committee also made mention of the U.S. and Russia as two countries that have yet to honor their commitments. Washington and Moscow signed the Chemical Weapons Convention in the 1990s, which prohibitied the use, production, and stockpiling of chemical weapons. Both countries are still in the process of ridding their stockpiles; Syria has until mid-2014 to get rid of theirs.
