Senators reach agreement on immigration reform, http://bit.ly/UwahSS
A bipartisan group of senators has reached an agreement on the structure for an overhaul of America’s immigration system. The deal includes a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants in the nation and also addresses border security, non-citizen “guest” workers, and employee verification. The plan may have trouble receiving backing from the Republican-controlled House, but nonetheless marks the start of the the largest effort in years to seriously reform America’s immigration system. President Obama will offer his own vision for immigration reform in a speech on Tuesday, which officials expect to overlap significantly with the Senate plan. “What’s changed, honestly, is that there is a new appreciation on both sides of the aisle- including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle- that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill,” said Senator John McCain, who played a central role in shaping the agreement.

Missteps hiked Brazil night club blaze death toll, http://cbsn.ws/VhQF21
Over 230 Brazilians were killed on Sunday in a Santa Maria nightclub fire that officials believe started when a band’s pyrotechnic show ignited soundproofing in the ceiling. Many young victims were among the dead, including 101 students of the Federal University of Santa Maria. Bouncers initially assumed partygoers were skipping on paying their bar tabs and tried to prevent them from leaving. There was also only one exit through which people could leave. Police have arrested the nightclub owner, a band member, and a person in charge of stage safety in connection with the fire so far.

Egypt’s leader declares emergency after clashes, http://reut.rs/X1hrgg
Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi issued a 30-day state of emergency and curfew for three Suez Canal provinces where violent protests have killed 49 since Thursday. Hundreds more were injured in Port Said on Sunday during the funerals for 33 Egyptian protesters killed when locals lashed out in response to an unpopular court decision. Anti-government protestors claim that Morsi has failed to defend the revolution that toppled Mubarek and is not representing all Egyptians. Morsi warned of further punishment if protests continue.

Obama praises Hillary Clinton in joint interview on ’60 minutes’, http://lat.ms/X5qpZQ
In a ’60 Minutes’ interview to mark Hillary Clinton’s departure as Secretary of State, Clinton and the president recounted their joint foreign policy accomplishments and expressed gratitude for being able to transform their 2008 political rivalry into friendship. “You know, if the roles had been reversed, I would have desperately have wanted him to be in my cabinet,” said Clinton, who was initially reluctant to accept the high-ranking post offered to her by the president. “By the time Hillary joined the administration, I felt very confident in our working relationship. What did evolve was a friendship,” Obama added. In the interview, the two cited winding down the war in Afghanistan, ousting Qaddafi in Libya, and getting rid of core Al Qaeda leaders as a few of their greatest successes.

Gun control advocates march as nation reels from school shootings, http://bit.ly/TMIpMh
Thousands demonstrated in Washington on Saturday as part of a “March on Washington for Gun Control,” calling for tougher gun laws. The marchers rallied for a reinstatement of the federal ban on the sale of military-style semi-automatic rifles, like that used in the Newtown shooting, as well as universal background checks and a ban on sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines. Many demonstrators held up the names of victims killed at Newtown and in other school shootings as they took part in the first major demonstration since the Newtown shooting in December. “Only an outraged public can end the gun violence that has enveloped our country,” said U.S. Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-District of Columbia). “We the people who did not act before, we the people this time will step forward.”

Iranian state TV says country has successfully sent monkey into space, http://bit.ly/X3oWSk
Iran announced today that it successfully launched a monkey into space, bringing the nation one step closer toward its ultimate goal of sending an astronaut into space. According to Iran state TV, the monkey was sent on a rocket 72 miles into space and returned safely. Iran has long hoped to send a man into space as part of its ambitious aerospace program, which also includes plans for a new space center. The U.S. remains skeptical of Iran’s intentions, worrying that space program technology could also be used to develop long-range missiles armed with nuclear warheads.

Syria unrest: Damascus attack ‘was suicide bomb’, http://bbc.in/SQyJch
A military headquarters in the Syrian capitol of Damascus has been attacked by vehicle bombs driven by suicide bombers. Four military guards were killed and 14 injured, according to Syrian state television, contradicting an earlier official account which reported no casualties. The blasts ignited a swath of the compound including the building that houses the General Staff, although state media insist no senior military officials were harmed. The Free Syrian Army, which represents the rebel opposition to President Assad’s rule, claimed responsibility for the attack, but did not mention suicide bombing specifically.

Iranian president accuses West of intimidation in U.N address, http://bit.ly/OV1wkz
The President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, spoke at the second day of the United Nations General Debate, saying that Western “hegemonic powers” are threatening Iran. He told delegates that Iran “welcomes any effort intended to provide and promote peace, stability and tranquility,” but that “a state of mistrust has cast its shadow on the international relations, whilst there is no trusted or just authority to help resolve world conflicts.” Ahmadinejad also railed against “uncivilized Zionists” and Israel. The chair reserved for the United States delegate was conspicuously empty during the speech as the U.S. has “decided not to attend” according to an American spokesman, who said that Ahmadinejad was not addressing the “legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people” but simply “spout[ing] paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel.”

Thousands protest austerity measures in Greece, http://bit.ly/RXYWLC
Protesters have thrown fire bombs and riot police have deployed tear gas in Syntagma Square in Athens, as thousands of Greeks protested against new austerity measures for the debt-crippled European state. The protests corresponded to a 24-hour general strike organized by two major Greek unions, and more than 25,000 peaceful protesters took place in Athens. The government of Greece must commit to cutting $11.5 billion from its budget in order to receive the next installment of bailout money.

    CRUCIAL:

Iran ‘ready to fire missiles at US bases,’ http://bit.ly/NCNZqe
A commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said that the country is “ready to fire missiles” at U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf within minutes of an attack on Iran. In response to increased U.S. military presence, missiles have been aimed at 35 U.S. military bases in the Middle East and Israel. This announcement comes after the Revolutionary Guard participated in a three-day war game exercise called Great Prophet Seven, which Iranian officials claimed was to show defiance against western pressure, especially the oil sanctions that went into effect this week.

WikiLeaks has data from 2.4 million Syrian emails, http://lat.ms/OtTzQD
WikiLeaks announced today that it will publish 2.4 million Syrian government emails. An official said that the emails, covering August 2006 through March 2012, show a relationship between Assad’s government and Western companies. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said that both Syria and the people in the emails will find the document dump “embarrassing.”  The source of the emails remains undisclosed.

Six arrested in London anti-terror operation, http://bbc.in/LzIJ8e
Scotland Yard has arrested five men and one woman, all between the ages of 18 and 30, who are suspected of terrorism in London. This is just one of several cases of arrests over the last few months on terror-related suspicions or incidents. London’s Metropolitan Police are concerned about potential acts of terrorism ahead of the Olympic Games. The group apprehended is not believed to have been involved with any plans related to the summer event.

3 Children, Ages 7 to 9, Found Dead in Iowa River, http://abcn.ws/OtXRHD
Three children were found dead in the Iowa River last night after apparently drowning during Independence Day celebrations. Police searched for the two girls, ages 7 and 9, and one boy, age 7, after they were separated from the rest of the children swimming in the river. Though the river is relatively shallow from the recent draught, the Marshalltown, Iowa Police Chief said there are still parts of the water that are over 12 feet deep. Another child drowned in the Iowa River last month.

The US adds forces in the Persian Gulf; Chief Justice Roberts reportedly switched his view to uphold the individual mandate; and Microsoft takes $6.2 billion in losses in its fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Andy Griffith dies at 86, and J.K. Rowling reveals the cover for ‘The Casual Vacancy.’

    CRUCIAL:

U.S. Adds Forces in Persian Gulf, a Signal to Iran, http://nyti.ms/MRnSNY
The United States has deployed military reinforcements in the Persian Gulf. This move, meant to keep Iran from shutting down the Strait of Hormuz and moving forward with its nuclear ambitions, has apparently been in the U.S.’s plans for a while. The move is also meant to signal to Israel that the U.S. is on top of its enemy. There is a risk, though. Increased military presence in the Persian Gulf could agitate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, especially since the U.S. and other allies are planning to embargo Iranian oil exports.

Roberts switched views to uphold health care law, http://cbsn.ws/MRm8UQ
Sources reveal that Chief Justice John Roberts initially intended to overturn the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act, but later changed his position and formed an alliance with the court’s four liberal justices. After learning that he was going to uphold the law, the court’s four conservative justices tried for a month to change his mind. Justice Anthony Kennedy—the one conservative judge that many assumed would defect to the court’s liberals—was reportedly “relentless” in trying to get Roberts to side with the conservative justices. The conservatives refused to join any aspect of Roberts’ opinion and drafted an unusual joint dissent.

Microsoft takes $6.2B hit to account for ad woes, http://bit.ly/N5DCLA
Microsoft Corp. will take a $6.2 billion hit, mainly due to its ill-advised purchase of aQuantive, an online advertising business. The charge will cut a hole in the company’s fourth quarter, which ended in June, with analysts predicting the company’s earnings to be about $5.3 billion. Microsoft has been criticized recently for some of its acquisitions, including paying too much for aQuantive in 2007 and its risky 2011 Skype undertaking.

    Monday, March 5th, 2012

President Obama will hold his first 2012 press conference on Super Tuesday; the POTUS will also meet today with Israel’s Prime Minister to talk about Iran; Attorney General Eric Holder discusses the justification of killing American terrorists; San Francisco has been rattled by a 4.0 earthquake early this morning; and Romney and Santorum wage interesting battles in Ohio and Tennessee. CRUCIAL:

(via Fox News) Obama to hold press conference on Super Tuesday: President Barack Obama will hold his first news conference of the year Tuesday, the same day his Republican rivals face off in 10 voting contests. White House spokesman Jay Carney announced the Tuesday afternoon news conference on Twitter. Obama held his last full news conference in November during the APEC summit in Hawaii. Tuesday’s news conference comes amid an uptick in the U.S. economy. But the Obama administration has found itself dealing with several pressing foreign policy concerns, including the violent government crackdown in Syria and rising tensions in the Middle East over Iran’s disputed nuclear program, http://fxn.ws/xm6ob7

Holder expected to explain rationale for targeting U.S. citizens abroad, http://wapo.st/z6jUuM
Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. will reveal details today on the Obama administration’s legal process for killing U.S. citizens abroad. The prime example in this case is New Mexico-born Anwar al Awlaki, who joined an al-Qaeda operative in Yemen and was killed in an airstrike this past September. Holder is expected to argue that killing an American terrorist is legal under the 2001 congressional authorization of the use of military force and that America’s self-defense is not only within traditional enemy battlefields.

Barack Obama and Benajamin Netanyahu in Iran talks, http://bbc.in/wS1y2K
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet at the White House  with President Obama this morning to “discuss a range of strategic issues of mutual concern.” Obama said yesterday at a pro-Israel conference that there has been too much “loose talk” of starting war with Tehran. Israel believes that Iran is developing nuclear weapons despite the Iranian government’s denial, leading Israel to discuss possible preemptive strikes against Iran’s nuclear development.

Bay Area Wakes Up To Magnitude 4.0 East Bay Quake, http://cbsloc.al/Ajvf3H
A 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay Area at 5:33 a.m. this morning. The quake was felt across much of the East bay, North Bay, and San Francisco, and only lasted a few seconds. The shallow quake was centered 13 miles from San Francisco City Hall. So far there are no major reports of damage, injuries, or power outages.

Mitt Romney has the momentum in Ohio: Poll, http://wapo.st/w2BprE
Quinnipiac University is giving Ohio to candidate Mitt Romney, showing him leading Rick Santorum by 34 to 31 percent. The poll cites that the lead is significant compared to Romney’s 10-point deficit last week. However, as always, another poll conflicts, with NBC/Marist projecting a dead heat between the candidates. Quinnipiac University surveyed a total of 753 likely Ohio Republican voters. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich comes in third with 15 percent; Texas Rep. Ron Paul follows with 12 percent. If Romney wins Ohio, strategists say the primary is over.

(via CNN) Poll: All tied up in Tennessee: An American Research Group survey released Sunday indicates that 35% of likely GOP primary voters in the state are backing former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, with 31% supporting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 20% backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and 9% supporting Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. Santorum’s four point advantage is within the poll’s sampling error, which means it’s basically all tied up.
