Happy birthday to the newest voter

    Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

[Ed note: Maeve, our awesome intern, wrote this post. Happy birthday, Maeve!]

Maeve RegistersYou would expect that everyone at Rock the Vote is registered to actually, well, vote. However, up until today, there was still one unregistered intern. Me. No, I’m not apathetic or a convict. And, yes, I am an American citizen. Scratching your head yet? Let me help you out. Up until today, I wasn’t 18.

There are many freedoms and privileges that come with turning 18. Some are better than others. I guess I can buy cigarettes and lottery tickets. I can even order from infomercials. The one privilege that is too frequently overlooked is the right to vote. I just missed an election year, so I do have to wait a little while to exercise my right to vote, but that doesn’t mean I’m missing out on registering.

I’m proud to say that my first grown-up, legal, 18-year-old action was registering to vote. I filled out a form (in about 5 minutes), licked an envelope and dropped it in the mail. So easy, it didn’t even take time away from trying my luck with the lottery (multiple times today…). If you don’t have a paper form in front of you, you can fill one out online at www.rockthevote.com!

You’ll now find me at the polls for primaries, midterms and presidential elections (maybe in the Snuggie I just got off an infomercial).

    Rock the Vote
Bio: Rock the Vote was founded in 1990 to organize artists and fight against censorship of musicians. Since then we've evolved to focus on empowering young people to get involved in the political process. We use pop culture, peer-to-peer organizing, and the latest technology to raise visibility of politics and demystify the process of registering to vote.

    15 crowd-surfers

    Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

This past weekend, RTV sent a group of interns to the Bamboozle Concert in Philly.  David, Joe, Catalina, Rachel, and I gathered at the bus stop in Washington, DC at 7:30am on Sunday ready for a day of meeting people and great music. We arrived in Philadelphia after a fun road trip during which we bonded over 90s alternative rock songs and discussed whether cheese whiz would be good on a Philly Cheese steak.

When we first arrived at Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, Colin, the Pennsylvania State-Coordinator met up with us and gave us a quick run-through on voter registration. It was the first time any of us had ever registered voters and I think we all agreed it was a great feeling.  It wasn’t long ago when all of us interns, who at the time weren’t old enough to vote, heard these bands debut on the radio and now we were talking to young voters about everything from music to fashion to why voting is so vital to young people.  We registered a ton of people to vote and for those who were already voters (good for you!) we signed them up for Rock the Vote updates.  We loved talking to those that were excited to volunteer with us.  One of the best parts was seeing people walk by with an RTV sticker on their newly-bought concert gear; it meant we’d already talked to so many of you!

Just when it started to get unbearably hot, Forever the Sickest Kids hit the stage with amazing energy.  Everyone was jumping up and down, waving their arms to the beat.  Since we were at the RTV table, we didn’t get to see whether the crowd met the band’s challenge of 15 crowd-surfers. But there was so much energy, I’m sure they did. Shortly after Forever the Sickest Kids, Simple Plan hit the stage. It seemed like everyone there sang along to their summer hit “Addicted.” We enjoyed meeting other music-lovers and new voters. It was great to finally get the hands-on experience with voter registration that RTV is all about.

    Interns at Rock the Vote

    Monday, June 21st, 2010

My name is Danni and I am a summer intern at Rock the Vote.  Seven of us from Duke University’s civic engagement program, called DukeEngage, got the incredible opportunity to work with the amazing people at RTV this summer.  We’re all so excited to be part of a greater effort to engage young people in the political process.  This summer, I hope to provide a glimpse into the workings of the interns at the RTV office.

I’m a rising junior at Duke studying political science, economics, and Chinese.  During my internship, I’ll be working with Jason on the digital side of RTV.  So far, I’ve been searching the web for the blogs you guys read, whether it is politics, entertainment, news, or fashion.  We’re hoping to eventually partner with each of them to get our online voter registration tool on their sites in preparation for this year’s midterm election.  If you’ve got a blog you love to read, we want to hear about it!

Rachel is another Duke intern.  She is a rising junior studying public policy with concentrations in environmental science and journalism.  She was particularly drawn to RTV because she finds their voting registration tactics innovative and effective: by aligning entertainment with politics, RTV builds the initial bridge towards a lifelong path of political participation. Like many of you, Rachel is a pop culture junkie: she tunes into E! News while staying updated on Washington politics.  She works with Maegan in Communications.

Last Thursday, Rachel and I went to the #140 Conference along with Tom our Communications Fellow. Where we saw Maegan, our Communications Director speak. In class, it’s considered rude and sometimes we’re even not allowed to be on our laptops during class. Apparently, it’s totally normal to do so at this conference. Everyone was typing away on the laptops and mobile devices, but here’s the thing, they weren’t being rude, so many people were taking notes and tweeting about the conference (although I’m sure there were some people checking their work email) that I saw the interaction that was taking place at this conference.

Stay tuned to hear about Jenn’s weekend trip to Ohio with Rob, Rock the Vote’s Ohio State Coordinator and the work her fellow Field interns Joe and Lauren have been doing

Meet the summer crew: part 1

    Thursday, June 4th, 2009

It’s summer intern time at Rock the Vote and as always we have a stellar crew this year.  We wanted to introduce you guys so we asked them to do a little write up.  There’s too many to do in one post, so we’ll spread it out over a few days…here’s Danny, Hannah and Michael.

    Danny Goldstein

Hi to everyone out there supporting RTV! This summer I will be interning at the Washington D.C. office for Rock the Vote. My name is Danny Goldstein and I originally hail from Columbia, Maryland. I have lived here all my life and am still in Maryland, and have just completed my sophomore year at the University of MD- College Park, where I am majoring in Government and Politics, with a minor in criminal justice. Professionally in the future, I hope to further my interest in public service and legal issues, and am contemplating whether I want to go to law school right now.. although I do not know how thats going to turn out. Outside of work, I really like to go out to different places, and travel, and one of my favorite things to do is go to concerts and festivals. So hopefully I can attend some of the rock the vote night shows this summer which will be held at the 9:30 club.  I am also a big fan of crabs, because that’s what Maryland does best!

Right now on my long metro commute, my playlist consists of Kid Cudi’s “Dat New New” (especially the Viking house mix) some Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Daft Punks live album.( I am especially liking “Face to Face” right now ).

I was extremely impressed with the fact that during the 2008 election, Rock the Vote ran the largest youth voter drive in history, and helped to increase the number of 18-29 year olds voting to record levels. In fact, 6.4 million more young people voted in 2008, than in the 2004 election.  Those numbers are pretty amazing. For the 2010 election, my hope is that Rock the Vote will continue to expand its youth voting push, and meet the challenges associated with getting the word out to young people through new mediums and technologies. I am very excited to be apart of the team at Rock the Vote this summer, and proud to be apart of an effort that mobilizes young people to get out and vote. I am also looking forward to hopefully getting an office soccer squad going, so we can dominate the city

    Hannah Pileggi

Hello! My name is Hannah and I’m here as an intern at Rock the Vote and will be here for the better part of this summer. Statistics is what I study at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Because I am from Pittsburgh I am a huge Steelers football fan and very fond of Heinz ketchup.

My major means that I study a lot of mathematics but also that I am learning a lot about sampling and survey design that I will be using when I help do some field work here at RTV. Have you ever thought about how a campaign chooses to spend its money? There are people like me (tons of them) who put together studies on everything from the marginal increase in voter turnout if reminded of Election Day via text message to the importance of absentee ballot efficiency. Projects like this will keep me busy for the next few weeks.

I will only be a visitor in the DC area for the summer but I love the friendly atmosphere and endless shopping and restaurants (although my bank account does not…) My playlist for my mile walk to work is currently: Descara by Yomo some great club music I picked up from my recent visit to Puerto Rico. Honorable mentions include Imma Be by the Black Eyed Peas and Lost! by Coldplay featuring Jay-Z. I cycle through playlists frequently though. I think Nike Boots by Wale will be a staple in tomorrow’s commute playlist. Wale is the artist kicking off our RTV Summer Concert Series, this song makes me want to take up boxing, Million-Dollar-Baby-style.

Since we are between major presidential election years it may seem odd to follow voter diagnostics but on the contrary I think its such a great opportunity to regroup before the next big push in an election year for young voters. Specifically this 2010 mid-term is a great time for RTV to take a look at problems that occurred with voter efficiency last November and use our viral marketing influence to spread awareness and education about voting to the youth of America. I think our RTV President, Heather Smith, put it best: “Rock the Vote will represent a defacto “AARP” for the Millennial Generation”. We have the potential to be a common resource for everyone 18-29 years old. How powerful is that?

Rock the Vote is truly a unique organization with a noble mission and I’m excited to be somewhere where I can help make a difference, and most importantly somewhere that is accepting of my nose-ring…

    Michael O’Shea

My name is Michael O’Shea and I’ll be working as an intern here at Rock the Vote for the summer. Originally from Cincinnati, I come to the political center of the globe to gain a fresh perspective on age-old issues. DC has an intricate and endlessly interesting mix of entrenched career politicians, non-profit/good-intentioned types and young, ambitious, curious and engaged citizens (read: interns). It is this ideological melting pot that makes the city a vibrant and stimulating place to live and work.

As someone who worked on this past fall’s campaign, the petty politics and 24 hour news cycle quickly grew tiresome. The transition to a non-partisan, issues driven, youth-motivating organization is a welcome change. You really can sense that this is a transformative time for our generation. We now have a tangible example that a “changing of the guard” has occurred. No matter what your political persuasion, I think we can all appreciate a fresh set of eyes on our nation’s problems.

Beyond the political spectrum, I look forward to participating in all the city has to offer. Having interned for my congressman in DC, I have a level of familiarity with the city that has certainly made the transition easier. The DC area seems to have an emerging concert and night-life scene that I’d like to explore over the summer. There has even been talk of some RTV staff and interns joining a soccer league.

When I move on from RTV at the end of the summer I hope to continue doing meaningful and relevant work in the nation’s Capital. I plan to continue my studies next fall in a Masters of Public Policy program and hope to eventually have some say in the decisions that shape our country.

It won’t be long now until the 2010 cycle is in full swing. It will be important to build on the excitement and energy established during the 2008 Presidential election. There will be significant House and Senate races all across the country that could have long-standing effects on how our nation is governed. Particularly in these mid-term elections, it is important for citizens to remain alert and vigilant to keep our local, state and federal representatives accountable.

I look forward to working alongside RTV staff and interns to continue their long-standing mission to mobilize and incite young people toward realizing their full political potential.
