    CRUCIAL:

U.S. Sues Apple, Publishers Over E-Book Pricing, http://on.wsj.com/I2MnGJ
The U.S. filed an antitrust lawsuit today against Apple, Inc. and five other large publishers, claiming that the companies planned to limit competition for e-books and their pricing. The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan federal court by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. The DOJ alleges that an agreement among the companies was made where retail price competition would stop, retail e-book prices would then increase and Apple would agree to a 30 percent “commission” on each sold e-book. Three of the publishers, Hachette Book Group, Simon & Schuster, and HarperCollins Publishers Inc., have agreed to settle. The alleged agreement between the companies took place ahead of the introduction of the iPad in 2010.

Attorneys say Zimmerman is isolated, stressed out, http://bit.ly/HxbDY6
George Zimmerman, under intense scrutiny after his fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, is making additional headlines as his physical well-being has deteriorated. Zimmerman has said to have lost significant weight and is suffering from high levels of stress. Two lawyers from Zimmerman’s legal team also reported yesterday that they have “lost contact” with Zimmerman and will no longer be representing him as a result. Despite this, Zimmerman has gone against the advice of his counsel by contacting special prosecutor Angela Corey who will decide if he will face charges.

Tsunami Watch Canceled In Indian Ocean; Quake Struck Near Indonesia, http://n.pr/Iscybc
An 8.6-magnitude earthquake and an 8.2-magnitude aftershock hit off the west coast of Northern Sumatra this morning, causing local officials to panic over possible tsunamis from the Indian Ocean. But to the country’s relief, the tsunami watch was canceled shortly before 9 a.m. ET and existing waves were minor. Damage from the actual quakes is also being reported as manageable.

Mass murderer Charles Manson up for parole, http://abcn.ws/HAM33E
Today a California parole board will meet to determine if Charles Manson could qualify for parole. Manson has been denied parole 11 times. Due to violating prison rules several times over the past five years, possessing weapons, threatening an officer, and using a contraband cell phone, his chances of parole are slim. Manson is serving a life sentence for an L.A. killing spree he conducted in 1969. Manson has not appeared at his hearings since 1997.

For Romney, a shift – finally – to the general election, http://cbsn.ws/HBHmnY
Mitt Romney is now completely shifting focus to the general election after Rick Santorum suspended his campaign yesterday.  Now without significant Republican competition, Romney is directing his fundraising and campaigning against Obama. This month, Romney was prepared to buy $3 million worth of ads to campaign against Santorum in Pennsylvania. Conservative media are now questioning how the GOP will welcome Romney after criticizing his policies as being too liberal.

Syrian rebels get arms from abroad: source, http://reut.rs/yj5SW5
Today, 50 countries calling themselves the Friends of Syria are meeting in Tunisia to demand that Syria allow international aid for civilians wounded in President Bashar al-Assad’s violent crackdowns on protestors. 2,000 Assad supporters tried to storm the meeting, but they were thwarted by police with truncheons. At the meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Assad that the opposition will arm itself and overthrow him if he continues the violence. Clinton said Assad will “pay a heavy cost’ if he continues to block aid and that the Syrian leader will have “more blood on his hands.” There have been some reports from Syrian opposition that they’ve received military aid, but Western officials have yet to confirm this. 11 people died in the continued crackdown on Homs today.

Midair helicopter collision kills 7 Marines, http://bit.ly/yvZy4A
Two helicopters collided in Yuma, AZ Wednesday night killing seven Marines. Six of the dead were from Camp Pendleton in California while one was from a base in Yuma. Although the skies were clear, the accident may be attributed to a “brown out,” which is when dust limits visibility after a helicopter’s take-off and landing.

Same-sex marriage bill approved by Maryland Senate, http://wapo.st/wOQaNH
Maryland’s state Senate has pass a measure that will legalize same-sex unions. Governor Martin O’Malley has promised to sign the bill, making Maryland the eighth state to legalize gay marriage. Maryland’s legislation has one of the largest Democratic majorities in the country. Despite this, the bill still faced opposition from lawmakers with Catholic and evangelical ties as well as from African-Americans legislators.

In a study published in Science, American scientists discovered that Sifrhippus, the first horse, shrank from twelve pounds to eight and a half when the climate warmed up about 56 million years ago. Scientists have conjectured that mammals shrink from global warming; however, this discovery provides the first data on the hypothesis.

Rick Santorum winning more support from Republican women, http://wapo.st/w40Ky5
According to a new Washington Post and ABC poll, 57% of Republican women hold a favorable view of Rick Santorum – a statistic that has spiked 13 points since January. In past years, archaeologists have said that warfare killed off the Mayans. However, a new report published in Science says that the Mayan collapse was due to drought. It was previously conjectured that a severe drought killed off the society, but this new report says a 25%-40% drop in rainfall was enough to dry out their crops.

The reported missing amount is $1.2 billion. “I sincerely apologize,” he will say in his testimony. Corzine is the first former Senator to be subpoenaed by Congress in 103 years. There has been speculation as to whether or not the former Senator will invoke his constitutional right against self incrimination; however he is not expected to say anything of substance at the hearings.

Russia PM Vladimir Putin accuses US over poll protests, http://bbc.in/vc4Xhr
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is accusing the United States of motivating the protests over the results of Russia’s parliamentary elections. Putin has specifically accused Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of fomenting Russia’s recent unrest, saying she “set the tone for some opposition activists” and “gave a signal.” The Secretary stands by her claim that her concerns were “well-founded.” Since the protests began on Sunday, about 1,000 people have been arrested in Moscow after alleging election fraud.

There it held al-Qaida operatives Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and others in a basement prison before they were ultimately transferred to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2006, according to former U.S. intelligence officials familiar with the location and inner workings of the prison.’ http://yhoo.it/vZ0JXa

The Mexican government says it foiled a plot to smuggle Saadi el-Gaddafi and his family to Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast. A Canadian woman named Cynthia Vanier allegedly opened fake bank accounts, prepared false documents, and purchased property in Mexico. Meanwhile, private security contractors were offered $1,000 a day to help get Gaddafi and his family there safely. The plot, however, was foiled in September, and Mexican officials arrested Vanier and her alleged accomplices last month. Gaddafi has since gone to Niger, where he has received asylum.

She also said that she will work hard to ensure that the President is re-elected, no matter who the Republican candidate is. Gingrich is known for his socially conservative views and has said that he opposes gay marriage. Gingrich-Jones, a director at the Human Rights Campaign, says her brother did not attend her wedding.

Obama administration refuses to relax Plan B restrictions, http://wapo.st/rL0DUl
For one of the first times, the Department of Health and Human Services overruled the Food and Drug Administration, vetoing the FDA’s decision to make the Plan B contraceptive available without any restrictions. The FDA says it is scientifically acceptable to allow women of all ages to purchase Plan B, the morning after pill, off of supermarket shelves. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said she had concluded that data submitted by the drug’s maker did not “conclusively establish” that Plan B could be used safely by minors. The veto means that instead of being able to buy Plan B off of store shelves, girls 16 and younger will still need a doctor’s prescription to obtain the drug. Women 17 and older can buy the pill without a prescription but must show proof of age to a pharmacist.

Gingrich says he didn’t lobby because he didn’t need the money, http://bit.ly/utrkXG
On Tuesday, GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said the reason he did not lobby after leaving Congress was because he was charging such a high price to give speeches. “I did no lobbying of any kind, period,” Gingrich said at a campaign stop in South Carolina. “For a practical reason – and I’m going to be really direct, ok? I was charging $60,000 a speech and the number of speeches was going up not down.” Gingrich also referred to himself as a celebrity during his address. The company has also sold $1.5 billion shares to private investors through Goldman Sachs.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit Myanmar next month. She will be the first U.S. diplomat to do so in 50 years. The visit comes on the heels of a proclamation President Obama made while visiting Indonesia, “For decades Americans have been deeply concerned about the denial of basic human rights for the Burmese people,” said Obama. “But after years of darkness, we’ve seen flickers of progress in these last several weeks.” The president was referring to Myanmar’s new civilian system headed by previous general Thein Sein. Obama also personally called Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Laureate who was released from government imposed house arrest last year, and asked her to support Clinton’s visit. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s party won elections in 1990, but the results were censored by the military government, which has been power ever since.

The school also said the police were not involved in the investigation as the statute of limitations had expired. The investigation has now been reignited due to new claims.

Davern told the Today show that “we didn’t take any steps to see if we could locate her,” and that Wagner tried to keep the investigation under wraps. Wagner, Wood, and Christopher Walken were boating off of Santa Catalina island when Wood drowned in what was deemed an accident despite reports that a verbal argument occurred before her death. In light of new information, the LAPD has re-opened the case.

Gingrich think tank collected millions from health-care industry, http://goo.gl/SZ5FW
Center for Health Action, a think tank founded and run by Newt Gingrich, was paid $37 million over 8 years by healthcare companies and industry groups. Center for Health Action recommended a mandate saying that people who earn over $50,000 a year must buy health insurance or post a bond, a similar decree to the one found in Obama’s health care policy. Supercommittee appears unlikely to reach agreement, http://goo.gl/MnLWx
With speculation increasing that the supercommittee will not reach a deficit deal, many are wondering what will happen. The Washington Post says nothing will result from it. The drastic cuts put in place to motivate a deal before the November 23 deadline will not be implemented until January 2013, leaving Congress a year to work out alternative plans. Some lawmakers are already planning for a post-election budget fight with Democrats hoping to gain leverage from the expiration of the George W. Bush-era tax cuts. Meanwhile, Republicans like John McCain are promising to prevent the $54 billion cuts to the Pentagon.
