This Thursday, Charlotte Black Gay Pride will be kicking off its fifth year of celebrating diversity in Mecklenburg County’s LGBT community. Charlotte Black Gay Pride is the earlier of two LGBT events recognizing gays and lesbians in Charlotte. The other event, Pride Charlotte, will take place on October 2. Though Pride Charlotte is open to all races, in the past it has been predominantly white. In July of 2005, Charlotte Black Gay Pride (CBGP) began its annual celebration, also open to all races, to mix unique African American Culture with LGBT festivities.
This year marks the first time Rock the Vote will be at CBGP to register voters! Join us this Saturday, July 17th at the CBGP expo to register voters and enjoy the festivities. Just click here to volunteer.
This year’s theme for CBGP is “Engage, Enlighten and Empower,” a fitting sentiment since this year also marks the first time that CBGP will be collaborating directly with Pride Charlotte. The partnership began last year, after a grant awarded to the Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Community Center was split between the two organizations. Following that experience Pride Charlotte reached out to CBGP, and its organizers decided to continue the partnership for the 2010 pride celebrations.
