(via Reuters) Facebook search to generate revenue, no rival to Google – analysts, http://rtvote.com/13DIF0M
Facebook Inc’s new search tool has strong potential to generate revenue for the social networking company, though it is unlikely to challenge Google Inc as the world’s dominant search engine, Wall Street analysts said on Wednesday. Pundits and voters are abuzz as Romney is named the victor of last night’s debate; Turkish parliament launches an attack on Syria; sensitive documents may have been left behind in Benghazi; 18 schoolchildren are buried by a landslide in China; two suspects are arrested in the death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent; and Facebook registers its one billionth user. Meanwhile, Miguel Cabrera wins the Triple Crown; Chris Brown and Rihanna are spotted together at the Jay-Z concert; and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame reveals its latest nominees.

    CRUCIAL:

Turkish Parliament authorizes military operations in Syria, http://wapo.st/QJ94pc
Turkey’s parliament has approved an emergency bill that allows the country to attack Syria for what is now the second day in a row. The military action is in response to a shell fired in Syria that toppled a house in a Turkish village, causing the death of two women and three children. Turkey immediately responded after the attack, firing artillery deep into Syria. The country’s retaliation is not an official declaration of war; however, the Turkish parliament has shown no sign of withdrawing their offense. NATO has since condemned Syria’s attack calling it a “flagrant violation of international law.”

Sensitive documents left behind at U.S. diplomatic post in Libya, http://wapo.st/QK8m8e
U.S. personnel fled Benghazi, leaving behind what seems to be some sensitive documents after the September 11th attacks that killed four Americans. A Washington Post reporter has since found the documents that detail the consulate’s security plans amongst the rubble at the bombing site. The U.S. consulate building was locked up a few days after the attack; however, during the days prior, anyone was able to access the site. As a result, it seems some of the sensitive documents have gone missing.

Bodies found after landslide buries 18 schoolchildren in China, http://bit.ly/OEE3o1
18 schoolchildren, who were attending a make-up class on a public holiday, have been buried in a landslide brought on by recent earthquakes in China. One villager was also killed in the disaster while a family of three managed to escape. Four bodies have since been recovered. The earthquakes struck the area on September 7th, killing 80 people.

A Mexican Army officer says that two suspects in the killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent have been arrested and are now in a Mexican military facility. Poll: Uncommitted voters say Romney wins debate, http://cbsn.ws/SyXsFW
According to a CBS flash poll, 46% of 500 uncommitted voters surveyed immediately after last night’s presidential debate said that Romney was the winner; 32% said that the two candidates tied while 22% said that President Obama won. 56% of those polled said that the debate caused them to have a more favorable view of Romney while 11% claimed to have a less favorable opinion; 32% said their impression of the former governor remains unchanged.

Obama and Romney, in First Debate, Spar Over Fixing the Economy, http://wapo.st/QJ94pc
During last night’s debate, President Obama and Mitt Romney went head-to-head over the economy. Romney called Obama’s economic plan from the past four years “trickle-down government” while Obama said Romney had “top-down economic policies.” Romney has widely been named as the winner of the debate, speaking clearly and aggressively about Obama’s economic plans. Obama, instead, looked down at his lectern seemingly taking notes and responded with hesitancy at some points during the discussion.

    Facebook’s ‘Next Billion’: A Q&A With Mark Zuckerberg, http://buswk.co/SH855O
In an interview with Mark Zuckerberg, published today, the Facebook founder said that the social media platform registered its one billionth user on September 14th. The news was not immediately made public as it took some time to pinpoint this milestone user.  “It’s really humbling to get a billion people to do anything,” Zuckerberg told Businessweek, going on to say that the Facebook team watched the countdown together in their office. He also noted that Facebook has only 1,000 engineers, meaning each engineer is responsible for one million users.

SCOTUS’ ruling raises uncertainty amongst Arizona police; SCOTUS affirms Citizens United; and Jerry Sandusky is removed from a Penn State mural. Meanwhile, Mac users may see higher price options on Orbitz, and Facebook pulls its so-called “Stalker” app.

    CRUCIAL:

Arizona police face questions after court rulinghttp://bit.ly/Nwj5kh
Arizona police were hoping that yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling might clarify their role in immigration enforcement; however, they remain as confused as ever. The Supreme Court upheld the state’s “show me your papers” law, but deemed laws that would allow local police to arrest people for federal immigration violations or detain those who do not have proper immigration documents unconstitutional. Police are now left unclear on what justifies suspicion that someone is in the country illegally. To make matters even more murky, White House officials announced that the federal government will not enforce the “show me your papers” law.

Artist replaces image of Sandusky on mural at Penn State; ex-coach insists he’s not guilty, http://wapo.st/LNvMZo
Artist Michael Pilato has finished removing an illustration of disgraced former football coach Jerry Sandusky that was featured on a mural across from the street from the Penn State campus. The likeness of Sandusky has been replaced by an image of Dora McQuaid, a Penn State graduate who is a poet and advocate for victims of domestic and sexual abuse. Two red handprints, one belonging to a juror who convicted Sandusky and one to a sexual-abuse victim, also replaced the Sandusky image.

(via Philadelphia Inquirer) Decision on Montana case affirms ‘Citizens United,’ http://bit.ly/NwMQBv
A narrowly divided Supreme Court on Monday reaffirmed its landmark 2010 decision allowing corporations to spend unlimited money on elections, deciding 5 to 4 that a state court was wrong to uphold Montana’s century-old ban on political spending by businesses. The curt decision – two paragraphs issued without hearings or debate – further inflamed a national argument over the role of big money in politics, which has become a central feature of the expensive race for the White House between President Obama and Mitt Romney.

    CULTURAL:

Mac Users May See Pricier Options on Orbitz, http://abcn.ws/LoD1nM
Orbitz has been experimenting with showing Mac users higher hotel prices than PC users. They do not charge different prices for the same room; but the first results a Mac user sees after a hotel search may be pricier than those seen by a PC user. Orbitz discovered that Mac users spend up to 30 percent more per night than Windows users.

Facebook Pulls So-Called ‘Stalker App’ Hours After It Quietly Launched, http://bit.ly/MPgDIn
Just after its launch yesterday, Facebook pulled its most recent app, “Find Friends Nearby.” Perhaps the reason Facebook yanked it off the market was its news report nickname, “The Stalker App.” The app allowed mobile users to locate Facebook users who were near their geographic location, whether they were actually friends with them or not. A spokesman for the social network said: “This wasn’t a formal release—this was just something that a few engineers were testing. With all tests, some get released as full products; others don’t.”

During the Bosnian conflict, Mladic allegedly killed 8,000 Muslims. Family members of Mladic’s victims and survivors filled the courtroom to see him. In response to the crowd, he gave a sarcastic clap and a wave and then slid his finger across his throat to signal that he had to go to the bathroom. Mladic, who is 70-years-old, was captured one year ago.

(via Reuters) Facebook boosts IPO size by 25 percent, could top $16 billion, http://reut.rs/Jr5FrS
Facebook Inc increased the size of its initial public offering by almost 25 percent, and could raise as much as $16 billion as strong investor demand for a share of the No.1 social network trumps debate about its long-term potential to make money. Facebook, founded eight years ago by Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room, said on Wednesday it will add about 84 million shares to its IPO, floating about 421 million shares in an offering expected to be priced on Thursday.

Obama Campaign Announces Raising $43.6 Million in April, http://nyti.ms/L6qHrY
In a new video, Obama’s campaign manager Jim Messina announces that the campaign raised $43.6 million in April. While this is less than what the campaign raised in March, it is still more than what the Romney campaign has taken in. The $43.6 million does not include what was raised from George Clooney’s fundraiser as well as recent donations from same-sex marriage supporters.

Moscow police clear occupied park, http://wapo.st/KteylT

    CRUCIAL:

ALEC backs down in wake of backlash over voter ID, “stand your ground” laws, http://cbsn.ws/J8ybu5
Indiana State Rep. David Frizzell, the 2012 National Chairman of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), announced in a statement that ALEC will eliminate its Public Safety and Elections task force. After public outcry over controversial measures that ALEC supported such as Florida’s “stand your ground” law and voter ID legislation, Frizzell made the announcement that ALEC will now only focus on economic issues.

U.S. troops posed with body parts of Afghan bombers, http://lat.ms/HPj5yc
U.S. paratroopers who were given assignments to identify the remains of insurgent suicide bombers are now in the midst of an Army criminal investigation after photos have surfaced of them posing with bombers’ bodies. In one series, the 82nd Airborne Division soldiers took photos next to Afghan police while others squatted beside a corpse. A few months later, the same platoon was asked to investigate the remains of three other insurgents, and they again took pictures next to the bodies. One of the photos depicts a solider holding a dead man’s hand with the middle finger raised. The pictures have surfaced during tense relations with Afghanistan. The soldier who provided the photos to The L.A. Times wishes to remain anonymous.

Top U.S. colleges to offer free classes online, http://reut.rs/HY0Mnc
Classes designed and taught by professors at Stanford, Princeton, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan will now be offered for free online through an education platform called Coursera. Coursera, founded by two computer science professors at Stanford University, has stated that the interactive site will offer more than three dozen college courses in the coming year. Subjects range from Greek mythology to calculus to American poetry. Students will not get college credit, but Coursera may offer “certificates of completion” or transcripts for a fee.

Warren Buffett has prostate cancer, sees no danger, http://reut.rs/HY0j4h
Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Chief Executive Warren Buffett has stage 1 prostrate cancer. Buffett has commented that his condition “is not remotely life-threatening or even debilitating in any meaningful way.” Buffett will soon begin a two-month treatment composed of daily radiation sessions. The news of Buffet’s diagnosis comes after Senate Republicans blocked the “Buffett rule,” a law proposing higher taxes on millionaires.

Mark Zuckerberg Bought Instagram Without Really Asking the Facebook Board, http://bit.ly/JcNYbt
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg apparently made the company’s $1 billion acquisition of Instagram without consulting his board of directors. Zuckerberg bought the photo app from the privacy of his home, only negotiating with Instagram founder Kevin Systrom via phone. The Wall Street Journal reports that the board “was told, not consulted.” Zuckerberg holds 57 percent of Facebook’s voting rights, so he can make majority decisions on his own. But tech and business experts are surprised at the bravado of the CEO’s solo decision, especially with Facebook’s$100 billion public offering only weeks away.
