    In today’s news, corporations pay more in CEO salaries than in taxes; at least 88 have been tortured and killed in Syrian detention centers; an unemployed man finds $150,000 in his garden; and the U.S. is suing to block an AT&T and T-Mobile merger. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr.’s wife is pregnant and T.I has been released to a halfway house.

    According to the Institute for Policy Studies, at least 25 corporations, such as Verizon, General Electric, Boeing, and eBay, paid more to their CEOs than they paid in federal taxes. In fact, these corporations paid their CEOs an average of $16.8 million when the government paid the companies hundreds of millions of dollars in tax refunds. For example, the CEO of Verizon received $18 million while Verizon itself received a $705 million tax refund.

    At least 88 people in Syrian detention centers have been tortured and killed; 10 of the 88 were children. According to an Amnesty International report, the torture included “broken necks, cigarette burns to the chest and face, electrocution to genitalia, fractures and whipping slashes.” The Syrian government currently has 12,000 to 15,000 people in detention centers.

    Wayne Sabaj, an unemployed carpenter, went to look for broccoli in his garden when he found two duffel bags filled with $150,000. Sabaj and his father called the police who took the bags into custody. The police left a phone number where the bags were found. If no one claims the money, the police will work with Sabaj to claim it for himself.

    Judge Strikes Down Key Parts of Texas Sonogram Law, http://bit.ly/qmqutN
    A federal judge in Texas has rejected a provision of a Texas anti-abortion law that would require patients to see a sonogram of their baby before an abortion. The judge also struck down a provision where patients would have to sign an agreement saying they do not want to see a sonogram because they have been impregnated from sexual assault or incest. The judge said that the provisions violated the First Amendment rights of doctors and patients, and that patients should not have to disclose information that they would not even tell the police.

    The U.S. government is suing to block AT&T from acquiring T-Mobile, claiming the merger will violate U.S. antitrust law. The U.S. is also asking for a court order to stop any implementation of the deal.

    The East Coast is still feeling effects from Irene; the AP reports on the Afghan government damaging US peace talks with the Taliban; Obama has named a new economic adviser; and in a NY Times op-ed, John Lewis explains why new voting laws are a “poll tax.” In the entertainment world, Beyonce and Jay-Z are expecting their first child (and I already want to be friends with their baby); Katy Perry sweeps the VMAs; and Sofia Coppola weds Phoenix’s frontman in Italy.

    Even though Irene is gone, the hurricane has left 25 deaths, billions of dollars in damages, and power outages all along the East Coast. In fact, five million people are still without power. Officials said today that the outages could last weeks, as there are many service requests and travel is difficult because of fallen objects and flooding.

    In late 2010 to early 2011, the US had been holding peace talks with Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar. According to the AP, officials in the Afghan government were furious about the talks and leaked information from them, causing Omar to have to go into hiding. The U.S. do not know where he is and have not spoken to him since.

    Obama has nominated Alan Krueger to replace Austin Goolsbee as head of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers. Krueger is an economics professor at Princeton University. He had also worked as assistant Treasury secretary for economic policy until last fall.

    A CIA operated drone has killed Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, Al Qaeda’s second in command. Rahman was supposed to assume much of the control left available after Osama bin Laden’s death.

Kirsten Gillibrand speaks about the 91st anniversary of women’s suffrage. In entertainment news, Minka Kelly and Derek Jeter split up; the show must go on!     Hurricane warnings have been issued for Virginia, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Delaware, New Jersey, and the coast of Massachusetts. The winds at the center of Hurricane Irene have decreased from 115 mph to 110 mph, making it a Category 2 storm. However, it could still strengthen and cost tens of billions of dollars in damages. President Obama will make a statement about Irene today.

    At least 53 people were killed in an attack on a Monterrey, Mexico casino. The attackers threw grenades, shot guns, and set the casino on fire. This is the third Mexican casino to be attacked this month.

    Mahmoud Ben Jumaa, a senior official in Gaddafi’s regime, has been secretly helping the rebels. He would issue orders for the rebels to be arrested and then at night, help them plan the take down of Gaddafi. He even helped to direct them through Tripoli. The rebels have been asking for money to stabilize the country; the UN has given them $1.5 billion in Libyan assets.

    Naoto Kan has resigned as Japan’s Prime Minister after holding the position for only 15 months. Kan’s handling of the recession, earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis caused his approval rating to decrease significantly. He is the sixth Japanese Prime Minister to resign in 5 years.

    A car bomb has killed 16 at the United Nations Building in the capital of Nigeria. The suicide bomber drove a car into the building before detonating it. No has taken responsibility for the bombing.

    U.S. States Tighten Voting Regulation with Republicans in Charge, http://bloom.bg/pD0Gbk
    On the anniversary of women’s suffrage, Bloomberg reports that Republican controlled states are passing more and more restrictive voting laws. In fact, states have passed the most voting related laws since 2003. Forty-seven states have passed 285 election laws this year; 60% of these states have Republican governors. Democrats are trying to veto and repeal these laws, claiming that they are meant to disenfranchise President Obama’s demographics. Republicans argue that this is not the case. Rep. Lou Blessing from Ohio notes, “Democrats are looking at having everybody and their brother vote, whether registered or not, and Republicans are looking at making sure only eligible voters are voting.”
