    San Francisco is no more. The City by the Bay is officially Gotham City… at least for today. The city-wide transformation is all for Miles, a five-year-old who has successfully battled leukemia since he was only a year old. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the power of social media, Miles’s dreams will come true as he fights villains alongside Batman as “Batkid”. Thanks for keeping Gotham City safe, Batkid!

    Toronto mayor Rob Ford just can’t help himself. After adding to his list of missteps with some very vulgar comments about oral sex on live Canadian television, Toronto’s city council decided Friday to strip Ford of his ability to appoint and dismiss his senior staff. Even though his power on the political stage is shrinking, don’t expect to see any less of him. Mayor Ford and his brother, Doug, will begin their new “Ford Nation” television show on Monday (No, I’m not kidding. I wish I was.).

    Canadian police have released the details on one of the largest child porn busts they’ve seen to date. The investigation, dubbed the Project Spade operation, has led to the rescue of 386 children around the world and the arrest of 348 people. 108 of those arrests were made in Canada, and 76 in the United States. The remaining arrests were made in other countries. Amongst the perpetrators were school teachers, doctors, and actors.

    The ruling Communist Party of China has said they will loosen its decades-old one-child policy. Labor camps, which are currently used by local officials to deal with people who challenge their authority on issues including land rights and corruption, will also be abolished.

    Saturday afternoon, Cory Monteith, star of the Fox show “Glee”, was found dead in his Vancouver, Canada hotel room. When Monteith didn’t check out at his scheduled time, staff went to his room and discovered his body. The cause of death is unknown, but police have ruled out foul play in the death of the 31-year old actor.  An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

    On Saturday night, George Zimmerman was able to shed the GPS device that had monitored his movements before he was acquitted of manslaughter and second-degree murder charges in the death of teenager Trayvon Martin. But, drama over the case continues with demonstrations across the country, debate about wrongful-death lawsuits, and Web-site-crashing demands for filing of federal civil rights charges.

    In response to the verdict in the Trayvon Martin murder case, about 80 protestors gathered in front of the CNN building in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard shortly after midnight Monday, chanting “No Justice, No Peace.” More than 100 LA police officers in riot gear converged on the crowd and began making arrests. Some of the protestors were carrying signs that said “We Are All Trayvon Martin.” Protestors also amassed in San Francisco, Oakland, and New York City.

    Edward Snowden has highly sensitive documents on how the National Security Agency (NSA) is structured and operates that could harm the U.S. government, but has insisted they not be made public. Glenn Greenwald, a columnist with The Guardian newspaper who first reported on the leaks, said the disclosure would allow “somebody who read them to know exactly how the NSA does what it does.”

    The U.S. Embassy in Cairo reopened Monday as a senior Washington official was due to hold talks with the nation’s military-supported leaders. The embassy was closed to the public for two weeks amid widespread unrest and mass protests in Tahrir Square, which is very close to the embassy.

    A trial is set to begin Monday on the constitutionality of Pennsylvania’s voter identification law. The case represents a major step toward a judicial ruling on whether the photo requirement should be enforced at polling places statewide or thrown out as unconstitutional. Officials on both sides say that they expect the state Supreme Court to ultimately decide the case.

    Judge Considers lesser charges in Zimmerman case

    This Thursday morning, state prosecutors are asking the judge in the Trayvon Martin murder case to instruct jurors to consider lesser charges, like aggravated assault or manslaughter, when they begin deliberations. Zimmerman is currently being tried for second-degree murder.  Zimmerman’s attorneys have objected and the judge is holding a hearing to decide.

    It has been one week and nobody knows where former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi is located. Authorities promise he is in a “safe place” and have also issued warrants for hundreds of other Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters. The warrants target Senior Islamist officials accused of provoking the violence that led to the fatal shooting of more than 50 pro-Morsi demonstrators on Monday.

    Pope Francis is finally complying with the United Nation’s Commission for the Rights of the Child about the Vatican’s poor record on child abuse.  The Holy See was given until January to submit a detailed report to the United Nations that answers specific questions and hands over confidential files about the movement of “predatory priests” between dioceses.

    Boston Marathon bombings suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev faced more than 2 dozen survivors of that attack Wednesday as he pleaded not guilty to killing four people and wounding more than 200. He is charged with 30 federal counts stemming from the April 15 attack.

    The official death toll from Saturday’s train crash in Quebec has reached 50. On Wednesday evening officials said that 20 bodies were found in the area following a crash of a runway oil train in Canada’s deadliest railway tragedy in almost 150 years. Authorities informed grieving families that the dozens of people still missing are now presumed dead.

    Thursday night, 1 million protestors filled the streets all over Brazil. Over 300,000 people protested in Rio de Janeiro, at least 40 of them injured, and at least one protestor was killed in Sao Paulo. President Dilma Rousseff who has not said much about the protests, called for a meeting with top Cabinet members. It is still unclear what action she and her government will take.

    The Miami Heat took home another NBA Championship title last night. What was a close game for the first three quarters and majority of the fourth began to turn in favor of the Heat with three minutes to go. The Heat have arrived at three consecutive finals, two of which they have now won.

    A background investigation was performed on Edward Snowden, the man who disclosed NSA surveillance programs. The USIS will not answer any questions regarding the background check at the moment, because according to Michelle Schmitz, it is against policy to answer questions about ongoing investigations.

    Rain has flooded southern Alberta, Canada. In Calgary alone, 75,000 people have been forced out of their homes. Officials have asked people to limit telephone use as not to overwhelm the system and get in the way of emergency respondence.

    Wednesday, the U.S. Naval Academy charged three midshipmen with sexually assaulting a female student at an off-campus house about a year ago. The former football players are being charged with two violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, one involving rape, sexual assault, or sexual misconduct, and the other for making a false statement. The boys have not been named and it is unclear whether or not they have an attorney.

    The Governor of North Carolina has agreed to repeal a law that allowed inmates to challenge their death sentences on racial grounds. The Racial Justice Act previously allowed convicts to argue that race was a determining factor in their sentencing. Governor Pat McCrory signed the repeal Wednesday.

    Prominent Republican strategist Ken Mehlman, who ran President George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign, is using his sexual orientation to try to change the minds of Republicans nation-wide. As the New York Times reported, Mehlman, a once-closeted gay man “is waging what could be his final campaign: to convince fellow Republicans that gay marriage is consistent with conservative values and good for their party.”
