Rock the Vote at Lollapalooza 2011!

    Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

The first Lollapalooza took place in 1991, when Rock the Vote was a one-year-old organization. The founder of the renowned music festival, Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell, wanted it to include a mixture of music and politics; thus, Farrell decided to bring on Rock the Vote to register voters at the first ever Lollapalooza. 20 years later, and Rock the Vote is still a presence at the festival.

For the fourth year in a row, Rock the Vote was inside the festival registering hundreds of Lolla attendees and educating them about new voter laws. Rock the Vote and Headcount partnered to mobilize the volunteers, all of which had a great time talking to festival go-ers and seeing the shows.

In addition to being on-the-ground inside the festival, Rock the Vote continued the tradition of being a part of the BMF Music Lounge at the Hard Rock Hotel, where almost all of the festival’s performing artists came through to stop by and say hi to Rock the Vote. The artists were gifted by top brands and were offered haircuts, make-overs, and even free tattoos.

As for the after-parties, Rock the Vote was part of the coveted Belve Nights parties at the W City Center Hotel. The party was a huge success and was filled to capacity both nights.  Friday night the party was partnered with VH1’s You Oughta Know new artist program. VH1 brought in performances by Two Door Cinema Club and Fitz and the Tantrums, along with DJ sets from Danny Masterson (aka Momjeans), White Shadow, and Grace Potter.  Saturday night ended with a performance by The Black Lips and DJ sets with Elijah Wood and Ana Calderon.

Thanks to BMF Media, C3, Head Count, and Giant Noise for all their hard work around Rock the Vote and Lollapalooza.  We also want to give a special thank you to John Legend, who was in town for the weekend playing 3 sold-out nights opening for Sade. He invited Rock the Vote and a few special supporters to his concert that weekend; the lucky few even got to meet him backstage.

Also, thanks again to all of the artists who came by and either did an interview or signed the Asahi guitar: OK GO, Beirut, Deluka, Fitz and the Tantrums, Dom, Kerli (in home-made shoes), Iration, Rockie Fresh, Local Natives, Mayer Hawthorne, Lissie, Kid Sister, Smith Westerns, Electric Touch, Taylor Momsen (who just turned 18!) & The Pretty Reckless, Young the Giant, Kids These Days, Skylar Grey, The Black Lips, and Ellie Goulding.  We even had Christopher Mintz-Plasse (aka McLovin’ from Superbad) autograph the guitar! Click here to enter to win it: http://www.buzznet.com/cp/asahiguitargiveaway/

We can’t wait for Lollapalooza 2012, when the election will be just 3 months away!  If you want the chance to be the first to know about ticket give-aways, access to exclusive parties, and volunteering with Rock the Vote, be sure to sign up here: http://www.rockthevote.com/.

    ‘Til Next Year!
