“POWER WON’T INVEST IN PEOPLE UNTIL PEOPLE INVEST IN POWER” – DAVID BANNER

    May 2nd, 2012

The onslaught of news can be difficult to digest every day. X or Y politician is up in the polls; the economy is still bleak; social issues are fought over; there’s violence abroad. There are major and minor events that pass us by every day, but it’s unfortunately too time consuming, and sometimes, too depressing to sit down and discuss all of it. Harvard University worked to change this notion by hosting Grammy award-winning rapper, producer, and Rock the Vote artist David Banner as he recapped America’s past 20 years. On April 27 and 28, Banner led scholars, activists and artists in a look back and forward from the LA Riots to now. “The LA Riots: Twenty Years Later” covered everything from Rodney King to the recent Trayvon Martin controversy, digging deep into African American social issues and the state of our democracy and country. At this discussion, Banner was joined by the notable Henry Louis Gates Jr. along with other panelists from Harvard University, NYU, Temple University and more.

The question of what America is has been eating away at the media conversation for months now. We are apt to question our society when an African American 17-year-old boy is shot dead on the way home from buying candy. What’s on the horizon here: revolution or devolution? However you want to answer it, the dialogue is needed.  The economy is threatening to implode; young people are facing student loan-debt instead of aspirations; and the country is polarized by bickering self-interested politicians. Banner’s voice on this array of issues is refreshing. Having much to say on the Trayvon Martin shooting and the state of American black communities in 2012, Banner remains a staunch promoter of the safety of African American youth and legislation aimed towards protecting them. In a notable summary on his conversation at Harvard University, Banner said: “The people of America, especially our youth, have the power to be heard; to change legislation and positively impact our culture for generations to come.”

We need more David Banners and we need more of these symposiums. We need to take to heart Banner’s brief and blunt words from this 2010 Democracy Class video: “OK listen, kids. Get a little closer. Your parents and your grandparents are going to die. So just by default you are going to be running things. So you might as well start early and get prepared for it.”

To learn more about the discussion at Harvard go here: http://hvrd.me/I4Wejq. Also keep up with Banner’s 2M1 Movement. In less than a month (May 22), Banner will release his new album “Sex, Drugs, and Video Games” for free on his website and on www.livemixtapes.com.

PA Voter ID Law Would Keep 93-Year-Old Who Marched With Martin Luther King From Voting, http://bit.ly/JoUATa
Pennsylvania’s Viviette Applewhite is one of the star plaintiffs in a new lawsuit that opposes PA’s voter ID law. Applewhite has voted in almost every election since 1960 and is an activist who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the civil rights movement. Under PAs voter ID law, Applewhite will not be able to vote because she does not have an identification card that would be required at the polls. She does not drive and her purse containing her identification card was stolen; she is also unable to register for a card because the 93-year-old cannot locate her birth certificate. Applewhite is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit filed Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, the Advancement Project, the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia (PILCOP) and the law firm of Arnold & Porter LLP. The suit is seeking injunction to stop the law’s enforcement before the November election.

John Brennan, the Obama administration’s top counterterrorism official, has revealed that documents found in Osama bin Laden’s compound show he was plotting the assassinations of President Obama, General Petraeus, and other U.S. officials. The documents also reveal that Bin Laden was thinking about changing the name of al Qaeda. Due to “disaster after disaster,” it seemed he believed the terrorism network was a “shadow” of its former self and that its leadership would “no longer be relevant.” Meanwhile, Mitt Romney has criticized Obama for touting his assassination of Bin Laden, saying “even Jimmy Carter” would have done it. In response, Obama quoted a 2007 speech where Romney stated, “It’s not worth moving heaven and earth, spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person.”

The report also noted that Murdoch “turned a blind eye and exhibited willful blindness,” in regards to the company’s scandals. The 11-member House argued that if he had been “entirely open” to News Corp’s shareholders and lawmakers then the illegal phone hacking would have been discovered and dealt with much sooner. The report also said that James Murdoch and three News International executives, Les Hinton, Colin Myler, and Tom Crone, should be held responsible for the scandals.

While officials from both China and the U.S. have not made any comments about Guangcheng’s house arrest escape, some are speculating that he will demand to stay in China and pursue his activism. On Monday, President Obama said that China has to improve its rights for citizens but did not mention Guangcheng. Chen’s supporters have said that Chinese police admitted that Guangcheng’s escape does not break any laws.

An Update on Student Loan Increases

    April 30th, 2012

For the first time in this presidential cycle, the attention is on the student/youth vote! As a result, here is an update on efforts around the student loan increase and the emerging “fight for the youth vote” by the Romney and Obama campaigns.

    • President Obama courted students at the University of North Carolina, the University of Colorado, and the University of Iowa early last week, pledging to fight to keep the student loan interest rate from doubling (and also calling on Congress to extend a tuition tax credit he pushed in 2009 to safeguard financial aid for low-income students, such as the Pell Grant program, and to double the number of work-study jobs available over the next five years).
    • Romney weighed in on the issue last Monday, also agreeing that the student loan interest rate should remain low.  His campaign hosted a conference call on Tuesday to push the message that the President has “failed’’ young Americans.  In doing so, he has put pressure on congressional Republicans to back the effort as well.
    • While both campaigns say they want to prevent the cost of federal loans from ballooning for the millions of students, they differ on how to reconcile the $6 billion cost of a one-year extension.
    • The House GOP bill is paid by taking money from a prevention and public health fund created under President Obama’s 2010 healthcare law.  The Senate Democratic version would force high-earning owners of some privately owned corporations to pay more Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes, violating Republicans’ anti-tax doctrine.

Speaker Boehner, after urging from the Obama camp and congressional Democrats, scheduled a House vote on a student-loan package.  And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid followed this up by scheduling a vote on May 8th.  The fight for the youth vote will now play out in Congress.

US PIRGs are leading the coalition effort to represent the concerns of students.  And then there are several national and local organizations represented, including some nontraditional groups coming to the table, like realty associations (because young people aren’t buying houses anymore).

In the coming weeks, coalition groups will continue to distribute/promote new reports AND push the “Don’t Double My Rate” campaign. The YI + Campus Progress/CAP + US PIRG Report analyzes students’ costs after doubled interest rates while also highlighting broad youth support for keeping loans affordable: http://younginvincibles.org/News/releases/student_loan_interest_rates.pdf. Some of the key takeaways of the report are as follows…
    - For each year that Congress does not act, the average student and their families will pay an extra $1,000 of interest
    - The doubling in interest rates plus tuition inflation will add 20% to the cost of college next year for the average family with full Subsidized Stafford Loans.
    - Support for keeping student loans affordable spans party lines: 92 percent of young Democrats and 78 percent of young Republicans say that increasing financial aid and making college loans more affordable will help make the economy stronger.

The White House is also encouraging groups to tweet about appropriate things to double, and end with #Dontdoublemyrate.  Ex: Double the pleasure, double the fun. #dontdoublemyrate.  Groups are organizing events, asking their members to contribute personal stories, and also mobilizing their networks to take a stand.

Rights group: U.S. asylum likely for China dissident, http://bit.ly/JIJ0nP
Chinese legal activist Chen Guangcheng will likely find asylum in America. U.S. and Chinese officials are working on a deal to secure Guangcheng’s arrival this week. Guangcheng originally rattled Chinese authorities by exposing state-enforced abortions in villages. Guangcheng made a video released last Friday calling for an investigation into the beatings, harassment and other mistreatment he, his wife and daughter suffered at the hands of local officials during his 20 months of house arrest.

U.S. spending slows, while income rises, http://cnnmon.ie/J4LZXL
U.S. consumer spending slowed in March, though incomes rose at a fast rate. The Commerce Department reports that personal spending increased 0.3% in the month. In February, there was an optimistic 0.9% jump in spending. And adjusting for higher prices in the month, spending increased only 0.1%. Income increased better at 0.4%, in comparison with 0.2% the month before. This is the first time since December that income growth outpaced spending increases.

Suicide blasts kill 9 in Syrian city of Idlib, http://bit.ly/JLZ0ct
By rigging cars with explosive, two suicide bombers killed at least nine people and wounded nearly 100 near a military compound and a hotel in northwestern Syria today. The blasts created two craters in the ground and destroyed much of a nearby hotel. The bombings come shortly after a U.N. cease-fire agreement to reduce violence between the Syrian government and rebel troops. Sixteen U.N. observers are on the ground reporting back on developments and peace strategies. By mid-May, the team is set to grow to 100 people.

In Vast Jungle, U.S. Troops Aid in Search for Kony, http://nyti.ms/Iod0YL
One hundred of America’s Special Operations troops are working with African forces to find fugitive rebel commander Joseph Kony who has been hiding out in the jungle for years with a band of child soldiers and dozens of child brides. No one knows Kony’s exact location, but research into the matter shows that the land they are searching is the size of California. The American forces emphasize that the mission is not to engage in combat, but to only assist African officials in securing Kony. Kony began his tirade in a northern Uganda village more than 25 years ago. He went on to create the Lord’s Resistance Army, aiming to overthrow Uganda’s government. His mission then grew to terrorize villages, kidnapping thousands of children to become a part of his army.

With a Steel Column, a Tower Will Reclaim the Manhattan Sky, http://nyti.ms/JjE9rk
With permitting weather conditions, a steel column will go into place this afternoon atop the exoskeleton of 1 World Trade Center. New York will then have a new tallest building. The 100th floor of 1 World Trade Center will bring its height to 1,271 feet, making it 21 feet higher than the Empire State Building. The building’s finish over the course of the next couple of months will see it at 1,368 feet, identical in height to the first 1 World Trade Center. The ultimate finish over the year, attaching an antenna as well, will bring the structure’s overall height to 1,776 feet.

Presidential race ad war begins in earnest, http://bit.ly/Iyn3cK
The presidential campaign ad fight began last week after a super PAC aired a 30-second ad mocking President Obama as “a celebrity president.” The super PAC is tied to Karl Rove. The ad asks “After four years of a celebrity president, is your life any better?” After that, statistics on the high unemployment rate and student loan debt among young Americans run. The Obama campaign responded with a 90-second video ad starring former President Bill Clinton, who speaks on Obama’s accomplishment of assassinating Osama bin Laden. The ad ends by questioning what Romney would have done in the same situation.

Barnes & Noble’s shares soar on Microsoft Nook investment, http://cnnmon.ie/JX1y8G
