    Obama addresses young voters

    Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

President Obama is holding a townhall for young people tomorrow that will be broadcast live and commercial-free on MTV, BET and CMT at 4pm Eastern Time. This isn’t the first townhall in which President Obama has participated. Just a few weeks ago, he was on CNBC talking about the financial crisis. But this time it’s about issues that matter to you the most…including the national financial crisis.

It’s your turn to ask questions about health care, student loans, home mortgages, why bankers get a bailout but you are till looking for a job? Why is youth unemployment higher than the national average?

No matter what your question is, this is your turn to ask the President a question and demand an answer.

This is a great opportunity for you to get your questions answered and make your voice heard. You can ask a question by going on Twitter and using the hashtag “#ask” plus any issue you want addressed (like “#askeducation” or “#askeconomy”). Click here to get more information on how to use Twitter to ask a question, and track what issues young people are talking about.

You can even use our comments section to organize. Start a conversation on the question that you want to be answered and ask people to tweet and retweet your question. Make sure you question, no matter what it is, is asked.

    Obama Addresses Young Voters

    Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

The White House is coming to MTV next week in an event titled “A Conversation with President Obama.” The President will hold a town-hall-style meeting (modeled after a similar discussion that aired on CNBC last month) with 250 young people from across the country.

This gathering is the latest in a string of instances in which the Obama Administration has reached out to young voters on the issues that affect them most. The President will also be holding the first summit on community colleges at the White House next Tuesday. With 3 out of 4 students leaving 2-year colleges without a training certificate or a degree, the condition of community colleges is clearly an issue that needs to be addressed for young people to gain the most from their education.

Next Thursday’s event will be the second time President Obama will have appeared on MTV to speak to young voters. In 2007, then-Senator Obama participated in the MTV/MySpace “presidential dialogues” as a presidential candidate. In next week’s discussion, the President will address questions from young people in the audience, as well as questions submitted via Twitter, on a broad range of issues that affect them, especially education and the economy.

Sway Calloway of MTV, Kate Cook of CMT and April Woodard of BET will host the event, which is scheduled to air at 4 PM (ET) on October 14th. The one-hour, commercial free, event will air on MTV, CMT, BET, MTVu, Centric, and the bilingual network TR3s, and stream live on the MTV, CMT and BET websites. October is National Voter Registration Month

    Friday, October 1st, 2010

Today is the first day of October and that means that there are only a few days left until the states close their voter registration process. So if you haven’t registered to vote, please do so now. Click here to register.

But the biggest news in voter registration is that President Obama just declared October National Voter Registration Month!

Here’s the statement by the President on his declaration of October as National Voter Registration Month:

I join all those observing National Voter Registration Month and renew the call for all qualified citizens to register to vote if they haven’t done so already.   Many states have early deadlines and registration requirements for those wishing to participate in this fall’s elections, and I encourage everyone to get informed and get involved.   A healthy, vibrant democracy depends on the full participation of its citizens – and that’s something we can all agree should transcend party or ideology.   Every qualified citizen not only has the right to vote, but also a greater civic responsibility to exercise that right – and play your part in the life of this country.

Student journalists address the issues with Obama

    Monday, September 27th, 2010

What is Barack Obama doing to help you manage student loans, or find a job after college? What would you say if you could call him up and ask him? Today student journalists from colleges around the country spent some time on the phone with the president to ask these questions, clearly speaking on behalf of their generation and voicing some of its deepest concerns. While the students received some congrats from Obama on their school’s latest wins in football, they also asked questions that got to the heart of their generation’s issues, including jobs, college affordability, student loan debt, and healthcare. Rock the Vote’s most recent poll of young people found these to be among the top issues for young people, with 96 percent saying they’re concerned about the level of unemployment in this country.

Colin Daileda of Radford University in Virginia set the tone by raising the issue of jobs and student loans. Daileda said some of his professors referred to Millennials as the “lost generation” due to high debt from student loans and bleak job prospects after college. “Do you think it will take a longer time than usual for our generation to get on our feet?” he asked Obama.

The president responded that while times are tough for young people right now, he is sure this generation will be just fine. In terms of what his administration is doing for young people, Obama pointed out that being able to stay on your parents’ health insurance until age 26 should help out financially, plus they have increased both the amount and availability of the Pell grants.

Throughout the call, Obama addressed the student journalists’ concerns over education and the economy, outlining a three-part plan that made direct connections between the two issues. He said his administration is working to 1. Make college more affordable, 2. Making sure college creates a workforce ready for the jobs of the future, and 3. Making sure everyone who begins college actually graduates. The president closed by saying that the Millennial generation can work together to solve the problems it has inherited, something that young people also affirmed in our recent poll. Eighty-three percent of those surveyed said they believe young people have the power to change things in this country. Obama reminded these young people of the confidence and enthusiasm they have shown in the past.

“The energy that you were able to bring to our politics in 2008,” Obama said, “That’s needed not less now, it’s needed more now.”
