17-year-old Sam Berns died Friday of progeria, an extremely rare disease that causes premature aging. There are approximately 200 children affected with progeria in the world and are only expected to live until the age of 13. Berns was well-know because he was so open about his struggle. Berns was to be honorary captain at Saturday’s New England Patriots football game, but died the day before. The team honored his memory with a moment of silence.

On December 11th, 2011, almost exactly a year before killing twenty-six people at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Adam Lanza called in to an Oregon radio station to talk about the 2009 case of a chimpanzee that attacked its owner. As heard in the seven-minute recording, Lanza compares the chimpanzee attack to that of a “teenage mall shooter.” Lanza later posted a link to his appearance on the radio show.

The gunman who shot and killed two women in an Indiana grocery store Wednesday night has been identified as 22-year-old Shawn Walter Blair. Blair was killed by police when he began firing at them. Police recovered the semiautomatic handgun used by Blair as well as a knife. The identities of the victims and the motive behind the attack have not been released.

Even after the spill is cleaned up, pregnant women in West Virginia are being advised to continue drinking bottled water. Because there has been little testing on the chemical, called 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, no one knows the potential effect on a fetus. Some people are more disconcerted after this announcement, believing that if it’s not safe for some people, it probably isn’t safe for everyone.
