    Congress Stays in Washington as Shutdown Looms, http://bit.ly/o83ho3
    Congress will stay in Washington this week to prevent a government shutdown, as it made no progress over the weekend. FEMA is using 30 to 40 million dollars a day to aid victims of hurricane Irene. The government’s yearly budget must be agreed upon soon as disaster aid could run out Tuesday. The Senate is scheduled to vote on a bill on Monday that will fund the government until November 18th and give it enough time to figure out its budget for the rest of the fiscal year.

    Late Sunday night, an Afghan gunman killed one American citizen and wounded another at the Central Intelligence Agency’s office in Kabul. The attacker was said to have the trust of the CIA and was a possible informant. The gunman attacked alone and used an American weapon for the assault.

    New York police have been caught on tape trapping Occupy Wall Street protesters in an orange net and pepper spraying them, supposedly without provocation. 80 people were said to have been arrested that day including arrests for disorderly conduct and obstructing vehicular and pedestrian traffic in addition to assault of a police officer.

    In March, the Army will begin to cut 50,000 troops; the cuts will be over 5 years. “We feel that with the demand going down in Iraq and Afghanistan, and given the time to conduct a reasonable drawdown, we can manage (the force reduction) just as we have managed drawdowns in the past,” Army Times quotes Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick as saying.

    More than 80 people have died due to the flooding in India. Heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh (UP) have killed more than 30 people. The monsoon rains have been affecting the area for the past two weeks, and they are expected to continue for at least two more days. The Indian Air Force has been called in to help as hundreds of thousands have been forced to climb on top of houses or trees to seek relief from the waters.

    Michigan State University (MSU) has performed a study that shows low-income students are more likely to vote if they are engaged in political activism. Before, the thought was that students were either involved in protests or voting but uncommonly both. MSU’s research suggests if high school civics teachers engage their classes in discussions about social issues and politics, students will be more likely to head to the polls.

    President Obama’s campaign is in full swing, and he’s taking shots at Governor Rick Perry. On Sunday, at a fundraiser at the Silicon Valley home of John Thompson, chairman of Symantec Corporation, Obama made remarks saying, “a governor whose state is on fire, denying climate change.” He also scrutinized the GOP debate audience, calling them out for cheering at the prospect of an uninsured man dying and for booing gay service men.

    Presidential Candidate Herman Cain won the P5 straw poll in Florida on Saturday. The P5 poll has been won by the later GOP nominee for the past 32 years. However right now, Cain does not seem to be a likely candidate for the nomination. As a result, candidates are considering no longer participating in straw polls. Candidate Mitt Romney, a front runner for the election, has even opted to not campaign in the the straw polls this year.

    Many Netflix subscribers have become disappointed in the company. However, Netflix is taking a step in the right direction by announcing a partnership with DreamWorks that will begin in 2013. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Instant Video is shaping up to be a tough competitor, as it will partner with FOX film and television.

    With a vote of 230-195, fiscal Republicans joined Democrats in voting down a bill that would have kept the government running past the end of this month. The bill was was crafted by Speaker John Boehner. Despite this, the GOP was angry that the spending limits were higher in this legislation than the targets they had set earlier this year.

    Obama is concerned that granting Palestine statehood will not end the long conflict between it and Israel. The President is, therefore, threatening to veto Palestine’s bid for statehood. Even without Obama’s support, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will pursue its bid for statehood at the U.N. “Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the U.N.,” Obama said in response. “Ultimately, it is Israelis and Palestinians — not us — who must reach agreement on the issues that divide them: on borders and security; on refugees and Jerusalem.”

    Maine Republican Party Chair Charlie Webster has claimed to have found 206 students who committed voter fraud in the state. Webster then asked Maine’s Secretary of State Charlie Summers to conduct an investigation of the students. After the investigation, Summers reported that none of the students had committed voter fraud. He did find one case of fraud in Portland; however, the man had already been deported. Even with this evidence, Webster claims Maine’s election system is “fragile and vulnerable.”

    Mitt Romney is coming out to show voters that he is just like us. From eating a Carl’s Jr sandwich and Subway morning flatbread to flying Southwest, Romney wants to show people he is a down-to-earth guy. Recent renovations on his 12 million dollar home has brought Romney’s wealth to public attention, forcing his campaign to work towards showing people that he is not out of touch with the needs of the common people.

    Megyn Kelly, host of Fox News Channel’s daytime “American Live,” is prepping for the GOP debate tonight at 9 PM EST. FOX News is partnering with Google for the debate, which will include video and other submitted questions from the public.

    While most of the country was following the Troy Davis case, Texas quietly held an execution of its own last night. Lawrence Russell Brewer, a former KKK member, was executed on Wednesday for murdering James Byrd Jr. The hate crime was carried out in 1998 when Brewer and two others beat, urinated on, and dragged Byrd behind his pickup truck for being African American. John William King and Shawn Allen Berry were also convicted of Byrd’s murder. King is set to be executed, and Berry was sentenced to life in prison.

    A six-ton spacecraft is scheduled to fall to Earth on September 24th anywhere between 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south of the equator. Theirry Legault, an amateur photographer from Paris, captured video of the satellite passing over northern France.

    “Resist further extraordinary intervention in the U.S. economy,” Republican leaders warned Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke in a letter sent Monday. House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl all object to a recent Fed policy that flushed $600 billion into the economy. Republicans say they do not believe that pumping more money into the economy is the way to create jobs or fix our broken economy.

    On Tuesday, gunmen dumped 35 bodies under an overpass near a tourist shopping center in Mexico. The dead bore signs of torture according to the prosecutor for the state of Veracruz. Officials say the victims had criminal records for involvement in organized-crime activities, including kidnappings, extortion, drug sales and murder.

    The Obama administration is building new drone bases near Africa to have a better counter-terrorism program against groups in Yemen and Somalia. The CIA is also building a secret airstrip in the Arabian peninsula. One site is in Ethiopia where the U.S. can better fight al-Shabab and in Seychelles, where unmanned “hunter-killer” drones can patrol Somalia.

The 42 year old man has had the date pushed back three different times and is now out of appeals. Davis made a last attempt by asking for a polygraph to prove his innocence, but his request was denied.

The rapper has been tweeting up a storm about Davis’ execution saying things like “Time to be seen!!!!!” and “We don’t need a trending topic, we need boots on the ground.” Also, Diddy asked his Twitter followers to call U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

    Nextag, Yelp, and Expedia are accusing Google of hiding search results for them. The companies claim they are targets because they have non-Google affiliated search engines on their sites. At today’s Senate antitrust hearing, the companies will begin their testimony. Google has denied the claims.

    The new CEO of Apple is unveiling the iPhone 5 on October 4th. This will be Tim Cook’s first unveiling since Steve Jobs left the CEO post. It is unclear when the phone will be available for purchase after the unveiling.

    REACT to FILM

    Rock the Vote is partnering with REACT to FILM, a non-profit that showcases documentaries meant to activate youth around critical social issues, on their kickoff stop to their campus tour of the documentary “Hell and Back Again.” The film is Danfung Dennis’s documentary on the war in Afghanistan that opens in theaters October 5th. Rock the Vote first honored “Hell and Back Again” at the Sundance Film festival where it won World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary film.

    A dangerous bacteria that flourishes in cold temperatures, listeria, has been found in cantaloupes from Colorado. The cantaloupes’ bacteria has killed four people and left others ill. The tainted melons have been traced back to Jensen Farms in Holly, Colorado. The company has already distributed 300,000 cases to 17 states but is now recalling its entire crop of Rocky Ford brand cantaloupes.

    Senator Lamar Alexander is stepping down as Republican Conference chairman. He says his reason for doing so is to promote harmony in the gridlocked Senate.

    Data shows that last year, more than a third of young families with children lived in poverty. This is a huge contrast from elderly families where the poverty rate is only a little more than 5%. Professor Andrew Sum said, “Young families with children are now six times as likely to be as poor as elderly families. This is a major generational change. From a public policy standpoint, we should be very deeply troubled by this.”

    Last week, Kathia Maria Davis, 44, of Laguna Niguel, CA was arrested on accusations of having sex with at least two of her teenage sons’ hockey teammates. Authorities are looking at a possible third victim as well.

    Today at 12:01 am, military men and women everywhere celebrated the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”. Since its installment, DADT has allowed the removal of more than 13,000 men and women from the military. Doug Wilson, a top Pentagon official, says the day will not see as many “coming outs” as people are anticipating. “The key point is that it no longer matters,” said Wilson. “Our feeling is that the day will proceed like any other day.”
