According to the Institute for Policy Studies, at least 25 corporations, such as Verizon, General Electric, Boeing, and eBay, paid more to their CEOs than they paid in federal taxes. In fact, these corporations paid their CEOs an average of $16.8 million when the government paid the companies hundreds of millions of dollars in tax refunds. For example, the CEO of Verizon received $18 million while Verizon itself received a $705 million tax refund.

Judge Strikes Down Key Parts of Texas Sonogram Law, http://bit.ly/qmqutN

The judge also struck down a provision where patients would have to sign an agreement saying they do not want to see a sonogram because they have been impregnated from sexual assault or incest. The judge said that the provisions violated the First Amendment rights of doctors and patients, and that patients should not have to disclose information that they would not even tell the police.

Yesterday, Algerian officials confirmed that Gaddafi and his family had fled to their country. Rebels are calling out Algeria, saying that its harboring of Gaddafi is an “act of aggression.”

DOJ Has More Questions About South Carolina’s Voter ID Law, http://bit.ly/odvkZh
Under the Voting Rights Act, South Carolina is “required to have changes to the state’s voting laws precleared by federal authorities or by a federal court to insure they’re not discriminatory.” The Department of Justice has looked over the state’s voter identification law and is asking for more information on how it will be implemented, so as not to have any discrimination take place.

Arizona Files Suit Over Voting Rights Act, http://bit.ly/qaJhjF
Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne has filed a suit against the federal government, calling the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional. Arizona is one of seven states that, under the Voting Rights Act, must get clearance with the federal government before making any changes to its voting laws. Horne has stated, “the portions of the Voting Rights Act requiring preclearance of all voting changes are either archaic, not based in fact, or subject to completely subjective enforcement based on the whim of federal authorities. Arizona has been subjected to enforcement actions for problems that were either corrected nearly 40 years ago and have not been repeated, or penalized for alleged violations that have no basis in the Constitution. That needs to stop.”

(via POLITICO Playbook) “Bachmann Spoke ‘In Jest’ When She Said God Was Communicating Via Earthquakes And Hurricanes,” by TPM’s Evan McMorris-Santoro: “Michele Bachmann’s presidential campaign says critics are making much ado about nothing when it comes to her viral quote stating last week’s East Coast earthquake and hurricane was a message from God to overspending DC politicians. ‘Obviously she was saying it in jest,’ campaign spokesperson Alice Stewart told TPM … Here’s what [Bachmann] said, as reported by the St. Petersburg Times: ‘I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, “Are you going to start listening to me here?” Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.’”

Jandali, who now is vice president of a Reno, NV casino, says he has only e-mailed Jobs. He has noted that he will never call him because he does not want Jobs to think he is after his wealth.

Steve Jobs announced last night that he will be resigning as CEO of Apple. He will serve as active chairman of the board while his right hand man, Tim Cook, takes over as CEO. Many wonder if Jobs’ announcement is due to the cancer he has fought on and off for seven years. The Wall Street Journal claims that his decision had nothing to do with his health, and that he will be very involved in the development of major products.

Zoo Mystery: How Did Apes and Birds Know Quake Was Coming?, http://wapo.st/piIjSW
The National Zoo in D.C. recorded its animals’ behaviors before, during, and after Tuesday’s earthquake. It seems that many of the animals predicted the earthquake. For example, the apes stopped eating and climbed up their tree-like structure seconds before it started. The flamingos huddled into a group before the quake began and then remained in the same formation during it. 15 minutes before, the red ruffed lemurs let out a warning call and then once more, right before the shaking started. Not all the animals were so prepared. According to the zoo, “the black-and-rufous giant elephant shrew hid in his habitat and refused to come out for afternoon feeding.”

(via POLITICO Playbook) SNEAK PEEK – - OBAMA CAMPAIGN launches “Project Vote,” a campaign-within-a-campaign aimed at increasing registration and participation among base constituencies – including young voters, seniors, African Americans and Hispanics, plus Native Americans and gay and lesbian voters. This effort — what used to be called base-constituency campaigns — melds field, political, outreach and communications, with a special focus on voter registration among groups that have historically under-participated, and base voters who have recently moved into a state or a community. An Obama 2012 official said: “The big goal here it to expand the electorate. That’s how we won in 2008, and we think that’s the path to victory again in 2012. There’s a registration component, and a turnout component for sporadic voters.”

    Steve Jobs 2.0, http://bit.ly/qCcvGv
Everyone is buzzing about Steve Jobs’s replacement, Tim Cook. Cook started with Apple in 1998 and successfully revamped its manufacturing strategies and demand estimations. Acquaintances have called him “calm, quiet – and deadly.”
