    Interns at Rock the Vote

    Monday, June 21st, 2010

My name is Danni and I am a summer intern at Rock the Vote.  Seven of us from Duke University’s civic engagement program, called DukeEngage, got the incredible opportunity to work with the amazing people at RTV this summer.  We’re all so excited to be part of a greater effort to engage young people in the political process.  This summer, I hope to provide a glimpse into the workings of the interns at the RTV office.

I’m a rising junior at Duke studying political science, economics, and Chinese.  During my internship, I’ll be working with Jason on the digital side of RTV.  So far, I’ve been searching the web for the blogs you guys read, whether it is politics, entertainment, news, or fashion.  We’re hoping to eventually partner with each of them to get our online voter registration tool on their sites in preparation for this year’s midterm election.  If you’ve got a blog you love to read, we want to hear about it!

Rachel is another Duke intern.  She is a rising junior studying public policy with concentrations in environmental science and journalism.  She was particularly drawn to RTV because she finds their voting registration tactics innovative and effective: by aligning entertainment with politics, RTV builds the initial bridge towards a lifelong path of political participation. Like many of you, Rachel is a pop culture junkie: she tunes into E! News while staying updated on Washington politics.  She works with Maegan in Communications.

Last Thursday, Rachel and I went to the #140 Conference along with Tom our Communications Fellow. Where we saw Maegan, our Communications Director speak. In class, it’s considered rude and sometimes we’re even not allowed to be on our laptops during class. Apparently, it’s totally normal to do so at this conference. Everyone was typing away on the laptops and mobile devices, but here’s the thing, they weren’t being rude, so many people were taking notes and tweeting about the conference (although I’m sure there were some people checking their work email) that I saw the interaction that was taking place at this conference.

Stay tuned to hear about Jenn’s weekend trip to Ohio with Rob, Rock the Vote’s Ohio State Coordinator and the work her fellow Field interns Joe and Lauren have been doing

    Raining Registrations in Columbus

    Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

A rainy weekend could not keep the crowds from enjoying a wide variety of music at this year’s Park Street Festival in Columbus, OH.  Between West Goodale and Vine Streets, Park Street was closed off to traffic, and open to music fans across the Midwest.  We met concert-goers from every corner of Ohio and visitors from as far as California who were in Columbus to enjoy the annual event.  Reigning from my hometown of Atlanta, pop-rock group Cartel helped kick off the 3-day weekend fest on Thursday.  Crowds also loved Ohio’s own Lt. Dan’s New Legs, Red Wanting Blue, and Saving Jane, topping off Thursday and Friday nights.  Saturday’s storm couldn’t keep old and new Smash Mouth fans from pouring out to enjoy the festival’s headliner.

Other fun to be had included corn hole tournaments, video game demos, and plenty of vendors and activities catering to the kids.  Adults were well taken care of too, with the help of USMC volunteers pouring beer all weekend.  Columbus never misses an opportunity to show off her food skills, and this was no exception.  From stone-baked pizzas to Belgian waffles, Park Street gave festival food a good name.

Most of all, the festival provided a great opportunity to register voters.  Plenty of newly eligible voters were excited to meet Rock The Vote staff and register to vote for the first time.  A good number of previously registered voters were reminded to re-register at their new addresses, as they had moved since 2008.  Rock The Vote was also thrilled to meet some new volunteers who are excited to help us out at our next concert or festival.  If you want to come out and have a good time with us in Columbus, check out our events page for what’s coming up next in Ohio!

White House Oil Spill Call: Dial-In on Tuesday

    Monday, June 14th, 2010

Want to hear directly from senior officials in the White House what’s going on to stop and cleanup the BP oil spill? You can TODAY.

As you probably know, this spill is a huge problem: the largest environmental disaster in our history, in fact. Fouled water, destroyed ecosystems, loss of jobs, tourism crushed. President Obama is visiting the beaches and command centers in the region and plans to address the nation about the topic on Tuesday night. You have chance to hear directly from the White House officials about the government’s plans for the oil spill and the Gulf region before the speech.

Here are the details for the conference call:

When: Tuesday, June 15th at 12:30 p.m. NOW AT 1:30 Eastern (call in at least 5 minutes ahead of time)
    Call-in number 800-230-1085

BTW, here are some links about the oil spill which you might find interesting:

Also, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration just launched a new website meant to be a “one-stop shop for detailed and near-real-time information about the response,” including technical and scientific information. See www.GeoPlatform.gov/gulfresponse for the latest data on the oil spill’s trajectory, fishery closed areas, wildlife and place-based Gulf Coast resources — such as pinpointed locations of oiled shoreline and daily position of research ships.

    Concerts, Road Trips and Voters

    Monday, June 14th, 2010

Thursday night in Florida, Rock the Vote volunteers and I practiced the greatest of American traditions – road trip to a rock concert! We piled into my Nissan with loads of gear – Rock the Vote stickers, buttons, t-shirts, flyers, a folding table, and of course voter registration forms. We hit the road in Orlando, waved goodbye to Mickey, and started our trek to Gainesville, home of the Florida Gators.
We pulled into Gainesville as the sun was setting and the crowd at Common Grounds was starting to pile up. We talked to lots of people about registering to vote and about music and we gave out a hundred Rock the Vote stickers. Before we knew it, scores of concert goers were newly registered to vote or re-registered at their new address. Pretty suddenly, it seemed that every person at the venue was wearing a Rock the Vote sticker, even the bands on stage were wearing our gear! The place was buzzing with excitement.

The Supervillains finally hit the stage at midnight, the crowd was pumped up. Everyone went crazy and jumped around to the drums and sax
    of this totally talented band.

When we hit the dark, sleepy roads of the Florida Turnpike that night, we each reflected on the new friends we met and the conversations we had with the people we registered to vote. In the back seat, someone caught some ZZZZs, someone else called a friend to gush about the fun we had.

After an mazing night of meeting new people, making new friends and giving people a voice by registering them to vote, the team in my Nissan cruised along the highway until we got back home to Orlando. This was one of those night where I look back on and think, “I’m glad I got to do that.”

If you want join us next time, sign up to attend our meeting and Launch party and we’ll discuss all the ways to get involved. Can’t make it? Sign up for another event here.
