    More on Haiti

    Thursday, January 14th, 2010

As more images and stories come out of Haiti we are seeing the true devastation of this disaster. We are working with our friend Wyclef Jean to collect needed donations to support relief efforts. Through his organization Yele Haiti he has set up the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. Please give what you can – every dollar helps right now.

Here is a note Wyclef sent to Rock the Vote supporters this morning…

    Dear friend,
    Haiti Relief Effort

There is so much devastation and suffering caused by Tuesday’s earthquake in my native home of Haiti. Over 3 million people impacted. The death toll is still unknown but estimated to be thousands. All this in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Your help is desperately needed. The most important thing you can do is contribute to relief efforts. That is why I have set up the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. If you are able, please make a contribution now. You can text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill) or you can visit www.yele.org and click ‘donate’.

Contribute now to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund.

My long-time friends at Rock the Vote will continue to track the recovery initiatives in Haiti and keep you updated on their blog with progress made and ways you can stay involved.

This crisis in Haiti is a powerful reminder that we must live life for others, not forgetting about those around us. So I am also asking you to get involved with this Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr National Day of Service.

You can find a local volunteer opportunity here.

As Dr King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?”

For nearly 20 years, I have been a supporter of Rock the Vote, speaking to all of you about democracy and the importance of getting involved. Now your support and efforts are needed more than ever. Please give to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund and get involved in your local community.

    Thank you.

    Wyclef Jean
