    Let’s get visible-r

    Monday, August 31st, 2009

Newsflash from the New York Times on the town hall spectacles we witnessed in August:

For all the shouting that has dominated these town hall meetings on health care lately, they have yielded a few important insights. The first is that the town hall itself has probably reached the end of its usefulness in the Internet age; if you’re looking for thoughtful dialogue, you might as well hold your next meeting on the stern of a Somali pirate ship. The second is that we now have a visual sense of the kind of voter who is militantly opposed to Obama’s health care agenda and, more broadly, to the president himself.

The typical anti-Obama activist tends to be white, male and — perhaps most significant — advanced in age.

The most vocal folks at the town halls did not look like youngest, most diverse generation that supports health insurance reform by wide margins.

If you missed the fun, there is still a chance to get visible and have your voice heard as Congress gets back to work next week. Join one of the many health care rallies across the country and send Congress back to Washington, D.C. with the message of reform ringing in their ears. Click here to sign up! Shouting, cool t-shirts, and signs are encouraged.

    Health care reform’s biggest fans

    Monday, August 31st, 2009

The L.A. Times did a piece over the weekend titled ‘Healthcare reforms’s biggest fans: young adults’. Makes sense to me, we are the least insured age group and more often than not seem to get screwed in the system. From the article, but way too common:

“When Abby Berendt Lavoi graduated from college, she got a job in New York making television commercials as a full-time contractor for one of the largest media companies in the world. She was eligible for health insurance only after she had been working there for a year.

Ten months into the job, Berendt Lavoi came down with painful stomach cramps. Terrified, she used Google to find a hospital that would accept patients without insurance, and underwent surgery to remove an ovarian cyst the size of a softball. The bills came to $12,000. With no savings or assets, Berendt Lavoi turned to her parents, who refinanced their home to pay.”

This story is all too common…I don’t know about you, but I think enough is enough. This is a reform who’s time has come.

    Fitz’s Take on Health Care

    Thursday, August 27th, 2009

fitzHere’s a message from Rock the Vote artist Fitz from Fitz and the Tantrums – we thought it was so good we’d just cut and paste:

“In the news we are seeing a lot of town hall meetings on the Health Care debate being disrupted by angry protestors who’s only objective is to sideline a meaningful debate on heath care, not actually contribute to a constructive discussion. And why do we see this plastered all over the frickin’ news? Because its makes for good tv.

Obama is not a socialist nor does he in any way deserve to be compared to hitler. He doesn’t even rock a little mustache! These are ridiculous incendiary comments made to shock and scare. Like it or not health care needs reform. As our population increases and premiums and the cost of care go up, every single economist sees an undeniable fact. This is not a partisan fact. No democrat, libertarian, or republican economist will tell you anything but the simple truth. WE WILL BE BANKRUPT AS A NATION in a mere 20 years if we do not reform. 20 years? who cares! Except for we as the youth of america will be the ones who feel the full ass kicking hammer of what that means when we as a country run out of money! You think its bad now? Fugetaboutit!!! WE ARE CAPATALISTS!!! Yes we are!! Lord knows I need some more duckets in MY pocket!! This is just my personal view but I find it morally objectionable to make the health of the american people a FOR PROFIT business! We are supposed to be the “Leaders of the free world” We are one of the only industrialized nations that dosen’t have a national health care system! We rank 12th in health care not because we don’t have amazing doctors or hospitals but because we, yes WE that’s YOU and ME and our elected officials think it is acceptable to leave millions of american without health insurance. We spend so much more money taking care of someone who is sick and uninsured than what we would spend insuring everyone and giving access to preventative medicine. If people have access to doctors and nutritionists and mammograms and everything else than we as acountry will be healthier. That’s just plain and simple economics, it costs less money than treating someone who has stage four cancer.

This is why we NEED a “public option”. It doesn’t mean that you will be forced to take that option but that it will be there for those that do need it or want it. This will also make the market place more competitive so insurance companies will have to offer the consumer better prices. The health care reform will also prevent insurance companies from canceling your policy if god forbid you do get sick.

Bill Maher said we are a “Stupid” country. I’m not so sure we are stupid just maybe lazy. I know its hard for me to really feel informed and its much easier to read just the headlines on a news blog. It takes effort to be informed in a society filled with entertainment that pretends to be news. But this is serious shit! Your health, my health, Your mom’s health are all affected by what we choose to do as a nation. Whenever you try and change a system as big as health care is it is not going to be easy and in that change there are certain interest groups that stand to loose. Those corporations have stock holders they have to answer to and no one wants their profit share to shrink. I think the argument can be made that in the short term these companies might stand to loose money but in the long term they stand to be even more profitable because they will incur less costs from expensive procedures through preventative care.

We elected President Obama president and if you didn’t vote for him he is still your president. I truly believe that he has our collective humanity and well being in mind. Red or blue! Disease doesn’t see party affiliation. Lets support him by taking the time to be informed about the facts not the “death panels”. I’m gonna start with myself and say get off your ass fitz!! and do something about it. I am going to speak out about supporting health care reform when i go on tour even if I get barrage of beer cups thrown at me. I am going to write my state leaders asking them to support health care reform and a public option. Everyone in this county is entitled to and deserves to be healthy and achieve the american dream and not at the cost of having to file for bankruptcy because they couldn’t afford insurance!

    Remembering a legend.

    Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

art.kennedy.giAs you probably have heard by now, Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) passed away this morning at his home in Hyannis Port from brain cancer. No matter what your political persuasion is this is a man who deserves respect. He was one of only six senators in U.S. history to serve more than 40 years, elected to eight full terms to become the second most-senior senator after West Virginia Democrat Robert Byrd.

Known as the “Lion of the Senate,” played major roles in passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act and the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act, just to name a few.

He was truly a legislator for the people. Sure, he wasn’t without his amount of controversy, but he fought for what he believed in and took the term ‘public service’ seriously. You could always count on him to stir the pot and make it interesting, never wavering from his convictions. These days that’s rare. He will be missed.

    Rest in Peace, Teddy.
