#2: "What would this amendment afford that IS NOT ALREADY guaranteed or protected in other areas?"

For openers, representation of residents of the District of Columbia in the federal House and Senate, and the right to vote for citizens living in Guam and other U.S. colonies. And then there are discriminatory voter ID laws that have been upheld under current constitutional law, laws in many states that disenfranchise ex-felons as well as felons still serving their sentences, election administration practices in some places that make it harder to vote if you're poor ...

This amendment doesn't tackle just one problem. It changes the rules for tackling a lot of problems.

(In respone to J.W. Pope)

A voting rights constitutional amendment would NOT be pointless because we currently have a fractured privilege, not a right. States can and do limit excon's right to vote, they also control how long polls are open which is a significant factor when considering voter turnout among other issues such as voter registration. By establishing a baseline for states to adhere to we can protect our right and perhaps get more people to the polls.

By the way, the amendments that you refer to are specific changes to who can vote, but these have been a hodge-podge solution. The proposed amendment would simplify and clarify this legal language into a concise statement, that all US citizens over the age of 18 have a right to vote, hopefully leaving little room for interpretation and thus exclusion.

This amendment is pointless. These rights are already guaranteed by the 15th, 19th, 24th and 26th Amendments, not to mention various state and federal laws, such as the Voting Rights Act. What would this amendment afford that IS NOT ALREADY guaranteed or protected in other areas?

Yes, we should most definitely move to ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to vote and prevent disenfranchisement of any one person or group of people.
