    Sen. Bunning (KY) Retires

    Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

    BunningFor those of you Kentuckian’s out there like me, here’s a little insider political news.  Republican Senator Jim Bunning from Kentucky announced yesterday he will not seek reelection in the 2010 elections. Senator Bunning had maintained for months that he was planning to run for his third term despite speculation that he would drop out of the Senate race because of his inability to fundraise, low poll numbers and lack of support from top state party officials.

    Secretary of State Trey Grayson, a Republican, has launched an exploratory committee for the seat. Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo and Attorney General Jack Conway have announced they will run for the Senate seat on the Democratic side.

    You need to be 30 years old to run for Senate – who’s up for it?

    What’s Your Health Care Story?

    Monday, July 27th, 2009

    Ever broken your arm and had a $10,000 bill that you couldn’t pay? Or avoided going to the hospital because you are uninsured and couldn’t foot the hefty bill?

    Right now Congress is considering sweeping health care legislation that would drastically reform our system, make health care accessible to all of us and keep costs down. But here’s the deal, legislators in Washington think that young people don’t care or have a stake in this game. We need to show that young Americans are a huge constituency that want and need reform now.

    We’re collecting stories from around the country about how the health care debate is affecting young people.

    Have you gone without care because it was too expensive? Are you unemployed and just got kicked off your parent’s plan? Are you self-employed and struggling to afford coverage? Do you hate your job but can’t leave because you won’t have health care?

    Share your story and we’ll make sure our point of view is in the debate that is so vital to all of us.

    Jon Stewart: Most Trusted Newsman?

    Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

    In Time Magazine’s latest poll Stewart topped the list as the most trusted newsman with nearly half of the vote.  He was matched up against Brian Williams, Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson.  Williams reined in second place with 29% of the vote.  Although if you saw Williams on the Daily Show earlier this week, he clearly can hold his own with Stewart:

    Another big day for students

    Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

    Another big step for students occurred today when the House Education and Labor Committee passed the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009 by a vote of 30-17.  The fancy title of the legislation basically means that if this passes Congress it will accomplish:

    • Investing $40 billion to increase the maximum annual Pell Grant scholarship to $5,550 in 2010 and to $6,900 by 2019. Starting in 2010, the scholarship will be linked to match rising costs-of-living by indexing it to the Consumer Price Index plus 1 percentage point;
    • Investing $3 billion to bolster college access and completion support programs for students;
    • Strengthening the Perkins Loan program, a campus-based program that provides low-cost federal loans to students;
    • Keeping interest rates low on need-based – or subsidized – federal student loans by making the interest rates on these loans variable beginning in 2012. These interest rates are currently set to jump from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent in 2012;
    • Making it easier for families to apply for financial aid by simplifying the FAFSA form;
    • Providing loan forgiveness for members of the military who are called up to duty in the middle of the academic year; and
    • Investing $2.55 billion in Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions to provide students with the support they need to stay in school and graduate.

    We wrote about this last Wednesday when the bill was introduced.

    This is huge and heads to the floor of the House next.  Want to know more?  Check out our friends over at Campus Progress and their Students Over Banks campaign.
