    Let’s hear it for better gas mileage!

    The White House just announced a nation fuel efficiency policy.  

    The policy says that all cars manufactured in the US between 2012 and 2016 have to be more fuel efficient.  They will be required to get at least 35.5 miles per gallon.  This means that we- as consumers- will spend less on gas and we- as a country- will therefore purchase less foreign oil (about 1.8 billion barrels of oil to be exact).  

    Higher fuel efficiency also means less carbon emissions and other pollution from cars!  The White House is saying the impact of this policy is like taking 177 million cars off the road.

    Is there a downside?  I can’t think of one…  we save money, take steps towards curbing climate change, and become more energy independent.

    The car companies, labor unions, and environmental groups all supported the policy.  And it is one policy that applies equally to anyone making cars so no one company is at a competitive advantage.

        Surely this will not apply to SUV’s, trucks and other passenger vehicles, right? Seems a little…impossible. I hope I’m wrong…

        I see it talk about cars, but what about our SUV’s and trucks our society is so set on having?? Do those still fall under the category of “cars,” or do they escape the 35.5 mpg mandate? Either way, a good plan…But crossing my fingers we can get the big vehicles on the road up to par too.
