Busy agenda fuels Obama’s first trip to Europe
In his first trip across the Atlantic, President Barack Obama hopes to sway European allies that his young administration could improve the global economy and the United States’ image.
Obama’s eight-day, five-country trip was set to begin early Tuesday and sends him off to meet with European leaders who split with the United States over the war in Iraq and treatment of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, under President George W. Bush.
New GM Chief Foresees ‘Deep’ Restructuring
New GM chief executive Fritz Henderson said today that the company’s restructuring plans must “go deep, go harder and go faster” in order to comply with the demands of the Obama administration, and if necessary, the company is willing to use bankruptcy proceedings to relieve itself of its overwhelming debts.
While a quick bankruptcy would help reduce the company’s obligations, he said the company and stakeholders prefer to stay out of court, which “does involve risk” and could hurt the company. But a team is working on that strategy in case it becomes necessary, he said.
Special Election in New York Is a Special Case
Voters in a House district in New York will elect a replacement on Tuesday for Kirsten E. Gillibrand, the Democrat tapped to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Senate after she became Secretary of State.
Even before a vote was cast, the contest was being freighted with all kinds of political significance — an early test of President Obama’s political strength, a verdict on the stimulus package, a do-or-die moment for a new Republican chairman, an early sign of how the 2010 midterm elections are going to go (and never mind they are still 20 months way).
Sebelius calls for action now on health care
Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, President Barack Obama’s choice to head the Health and Human Services Department, said Tuesday that if confirmed, “health reform would be my mission.”
Testifying before a Senate panel, Sebelius pledged herself to Obama’s goal of overhauling the health system to cover 48 million uninsured Americans. Although consumers, insurers, the health industry and others largely agree that reform is needed now, some battle lines have been drawn over Obama’s health overhaul plans.
Wilderness Lands Bill Becomes Law
Saying it was fitting that the seasons were shifting from winter to spring, as attention turned to the outdoors, President Obama signed the huge omnibus lands bill into law today.
He remarked that many of these bills, some 160 all rolled into one piece of legislation, were years, if not decades in the making. The law allows for 2 million more acres to be declared wilderness, largely in nine states — many in the West; more than 1,000 miles designated as scenic rivers, and adds land for national trails.
