What You Need to Know: 03.04.09

    Obama, Brown Laud Relations
“British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Wednesday an “economic hurricane” has swept the world and U.S. leaders shouldn’t view the crisis as limited to America’s borders.

In a formal address to a Joint Meeting of Congress, Brown said that protectionism ultimately makes every nation vulnerable because “a bad bank anywhere is a threat to good banks everywhere.”"

Treasury secretary says tax increases necessary
“President Barack Obama’s Treasury secretary is defending proposed tax increases on the wealthy, saying they are necessary to limit future budget deficits.

Timothy Geithner responded on Wednesday to Republican criticism that the administration wants to increase taxes during a recession. Geithner noted that tax increases on couples making more than $250,000 per year would not take effect until 2011.”

Stimulus Spurs Road Projects, Big and Small
“Kansas will widen U.S. 69 to remove a bottleneck outside Kansas City, along with a few other expensive projects. Maryland will spend its money in smaller pieces, resurfacing dozens of rutted roads and highways. Colorado will build an interchange on Elk Creek Road in Jefferson County, complete with an underpass for the elk.

There is nothing monumental in President Obama’s plan to revive the economy with a coast-to-coast building spree, no historic New Deal public works. The goal of the stimulus plan was to put people to work quickly, and so states across the country have begun to spend nearly $50 billion on thousands of smaller transportation projects that could employ up to 400,000 people, by the administration’s estimates.”

    Treasury Dept. Details Foreclosure Prevention
“The Obama administration today released guidelines of its massive foreclosure prevention program and it includes a refinancing program for homeowners with little equity in their homes and a loan modification effort for borrowers at risk of losing their homes.

It is expected to help up to 9 million homeowners lower their mortgage payments.Lenders can begin modifying troubled loans under the program immediately, the Treasury Department said in a statement. To be eligible for modification, the loans must have originated on or before Jan. 1 of this year. The program will end in December 2012, and loans can be modified only once under that part of the program.”

    Rock the Vote
Bio: Rock the Vote was founded in 1990 to organize artists and fight against censorship of musicians. Since then we've evolved to focus on empowering young people to get involved in the political process. We use pop culture, peer-to-peer organizing, and the latest technology to raise visibility of politics and demystify the process of registering to vote.

One Response to “What You Need to Know: 03.04.09”

    1. MaryJane says:

I would like to know how I can get a little help to get a project done for the younger americans and hopefully get people to realize the importantance of every one of the “It’s just one vote, what will it matter?” thinkers that if only ten-thousand of them voted it could very well make diffrence. Everyone should be proud to stand and have their voice heard in the disions that concern each of us from our everyday lives to what laws we do and do not have governing us. We the people have given our very lives to our governing forces and blame our laziness on each other and leave it to the masses to pass judgement on us all. We need to take pride in ourselves again. It has been too long since we have come together as a people because of the fires in our hearts instead of for show. Now is the best time to get off the couches, quit our bitching and moaning and do somthing to fix our problems and take care of our homeland. We put a face on for tradgies, natural disasters, and other countries. How long ago could someone move into a neighborhood and be welcomed by our neighbors? How many of us even know our neighbors for that matter? Who is involved in our children’s education besides the teachers and police who are both fighting a valient but losing battle agenst indiffrence. Everyone should be concerned with the education of the american children. Not just parents, but whole comunities because thease are the next generations. They will be running buisnesses, homes, schools and governments. Shoulden’t they at least know how to read? Form their own opinions? Know that one voice can make or break this beautiful country that we take advantage of and degrade on a daily basis? This is an all or nothing country, it has always been so, show some pride and love in it. It is our home, where each heartbeat pushes forward never to retreat. This is our responsability, and we have shirked it for far to long. We can change anything, look at the 21st amendment for crying out loud. We have the power to make this country ours again. From the homes to the schools to the streets, one country, one people. I quote “Anything is possiable if you only believe.” I believe that America is more then a song sung on the fourth of July, and that we ARE the people for which it stands. Equality and freedom of religion should be upheld, not a barrier between us. We all bleed red. M.R.
