    Dear Senator: Vote Yes!

Last week, the House passed the GIVE Act, a bill designed to significantly expand community service opportunities and reward young people for their service with education stipends, job training, and more.  This week, the Senate is taking up their version of the bill, the Serve America Act.  We need to make sure this passes, and we need your help.

Spread the word – tell your friends to contact their Senators with their support for the Serve America Act.  Post it on all of the sites you’re on - TwitterFacebook, whatevs.  Here’s a sample message you can use:
Rock the Vote: Tell your Senators to vote YES on the Serve America Act, http://tinyurl.com/d5bf37

This is the boldest service legislation Congress has taken up in 70 years.  The Serve America Act will:

    • More than triple the number of volunteer opportunities for Americans, from 75,000 to 250,000.
    • Create four targeted, problem-solving corps that will deploy Americans of all ages to increase access to job training and placement resources, help raise high school graduation and college-going rates, enhance energy efficiency and preserve natural resources, and improve access to health care.
    • Launch Youth Engagement Zones to involve young people in high-quality service learning projects and recognize ‘Campuses of Service’ that engage students in service activities, integrate service and learning, and promote service careers.
    • Mobilize skilled Americans to serve in developing countries around the world to tackle urgent problems, such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, through Volunteers for Prosperity, and expand international service opportunities that help better connect America to the world.

Want all the details?  Check out the bill and then take action.

We need to make sure that those we elected last November know we are paying attention to the decisions they are making.  Contact your Senators!

      Dear Senator: Vote NO!

This “Serve America” Act is going to make public service MANDATORY for every person aged 18-25. What’s so bad about this? First of all, a person’s decision to donate his or her time to support a cause should NEVER be mandated and controlled by the government. This impinges upon the freedoms of every American and smothers the true meaning of being “charitable.” Charity involves generous actions or donations given out of ONE’S OWN FREE WILL. It is also important to understand that within this “Serve America” Act, young Americans will not be able to donate their time to just any cause (honorable as it may be) but the GOVERNMENT will tell us what organizations we will be able to donate our time to. For instance, what if I don’t want to donate my time to Planned Parenthood? I don’t want to support abortion. Isn’t that my RIGHT?!

      Jessica,

There is NOTHING about mandatory service. This is a voluntary service bill. Nobody is forcing you to do anything. If you would like to serve your country this bill creates the opportunity for more Americans to serve. There are also thousands of different AmeriCorps programs for you to choose from. So nobody is forcing you to volunteer at a specific non-profit organization. You can volunteer for whatever issue/cause you are most passionate about.

Give the state of our economy and all of our other social challenges I think many young Americans that make up the millennial generation our eager for the opportunity to serve and help put our country back on track.

      In service,

      An AmeriCorps Alum

    3. Nicole says:

      Dear Senator,
Aren’t there more important things to be focused on right now, rather than funding a volunteer program. There are so many volunteer opportunities outside of the government right now, and the main focus of legislation should be the economy. How can we improve job placement when there are no jobs? Another issue is that not everyone is suited to do international service, and that presents a problem to me. This bill has some very good portions, such as recognizing campuses of service, and increasing high school graduation rates. But the bill does seem to me to be more government spending, which we do not need after the multiple spending bills that have been passed this year. Please consider the amount that is being spent to enact this bill. I would hate to see it become another bill like the “No Child Left Behind Act’ with a good idea but poor funding.

    4. Anthony says:

      Please vote NO!

Do your research and look at the bits inside of the bill. Specifically, the following:

‘SEC. 125. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.

‘(a) Prohibited Activities- A participant in an approved national service position under this subtitle may not engage in the following activities:

      ‘(1) Attempting to influence legislation.

‘(2) Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes.

‘(3) Assisting, promoting, or deterring union organizing.

‘(4) Impairing existing contracts for services or collective bargaining agreements.

‘(5) Engaging in partisan political activities, or other activities designed to influence the outcome of an election to any public office.

‘(6) Participating in, or endorsing, events or activities that are likely to include advocacy for or against political parties, political platforms, political candidates, proposed legislation, or elected officials.

‘(7) Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization.

‘(8) Providing a direct benefit to–

      ‘(A) a business organized for profit;

      ‘(B) a labor organization;

      ‘(C) a partisan political organization;

‘(D) a nonprofit organization that fails to comply with the restrictions contained in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 except that nothing in this section shall be construed to prevent participants from engaging in advocacy activities undertaken at their own initiative; and

‘(E) an organization engaged in the religious activities described in paragraph (7), unless Corporation assistance is not used to support those religious activities.

‘(9) Conducting a voter registration drive or using Corporation funds to conduct a voter registration drive.

‘(10) Such other activities as the Corporation may prohibit.

This violate your 1st amemdment folks! Freedom of speech!

And this may not be mandatory now, however there was a provision in the bill that was moved to another bill(HR 1444) which states the following:

      (6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable MANDATORY service REQUIREMENT for all able young people could be developed, and how such a REQUIREMENT could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

      —————————————————————–

This is a violation of your 13th amendment which states:

Amendment 13 – Slavery Abolished. Ratified 12/6/1865. History

      1. Neither slavery nor INVOLUNTARY SERVITUDE, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

      2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

      ————————————————

Folks, every person that is in the US government and military takes the oath below and the evidence above clearly shows they are violating it:

      http://www.history.army.mil/faq/oaths.htm

“”I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, FOREIGN and DOMESTIC”

      ————————————————————-

Americans need to wake up and realize what is really going on RIGHT NOW in our own nation.

    5. disgusted says:

      Dear AmeriCorps Alum,

Please read the FULL text of the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act HR 1388

      http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-1388

I refer you to Section 120 of the bill where it discusses the “Youth Engagement Zone Program” and states that “service learning” will be “a mandatory part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency.”

Also under section 6104 of the bill, entitled “Duties,” in subsection B6, the legislation states that a commission will be set up to investigate, “Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.”

Now, just how do you consider that to be “NOTHING about mandatory service”? What it says, is “IF your children go to secondary school it WILL be mandatory.” This is slavery people. Packaged up and boxed in a pretty way that makes you WANT it. But make no mistake, you will be FORCED to “volunteer”.

You mention the state of our economy. I agree, it is in shambles. Why on EARTH would we want the government to blow another $6 BILLION on a program that amounts to forced service? If people want to volunteer they will, without the government’s interference. There is no NEED for a “voluntary service bill” as you put it. If you are feeling limited in the ways in which you can volunteer then YOU go out and create more. I don’t need my federal tax dollars, the federal tax dollars of my children, and their children going towards a program that will amount to forced servitude.

Jessica has it right. Wake up America! While you still can…

      In Service,

      A United States Citizen

    6. shoeless says:

Perhaps one should read the WHOLE bill before writing off the idea that it is less voluntary than it first appears.

The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, known as the GIVE Act, was passed yesterday by a 321-105 margin and now goes to the Senate.

Under section 6104 of the bill, entitled “Duties,” in subsection B6, the legislation states that a commission will be set up to investigate, “Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable MANDATORy service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.”

Section 120 of the bill also discusses the “Youth Engagement Zone Program” and states that “service learning” will be “a MANDATORY part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency.”

You can put lipstick on a pig….it’s still a pig.

    7. Nicol says:

If you have any brain at all, read the bill in full and tell your senators to vote NO!
But, if you like being brain washed, by all means – tell your senators to vote yes.
